ntertainment The Compass, Dec. 2004 Page 7 The sounds of music By Fae Deaton Stajf writer If you haven’t attended a music department composition recital anywhere, and you came to the one on Thursday Afternoon, December 2,2004, in the Floyd L. Robinson auditorium you might have questioned if you were hearing real music. Be assured, the music performed by the composers and supportive musician “guest performers,” was “real.” To the uneducated ear, the a-tonal sounds do not play as music, although with many of the sci-fi movies and TV presentations and supportive music on the airways, the sounds would fit right in for those domains. The offerings were very well composed. The experience is intended also to give the budding artists education on the protocol of attending concerts as well as how to present oneself on stage as a performer. The compositions were offered in groupings that help highlight each style or section. The music is not just picking away at the keyboard or particular instrument. Students explained about the structure of the various Harmony theories (Theory I - V) classes, contrapuntal and diatonic harmonies, and chromatic as well. The presentation was multi-modal, multi-media, as different instruments were joined with like instruments, as well as the piano, and or other instruments, and a picture/slide was projected onto a back- screen. Some slides identified the type of theory the compositions were written in, as well as which professor was in charge of which theory class. During the performance/ composition on the synthesizer, butterfly shdes with comments were projected onto the screen, matching the mood of the music accompanying the slides. Classical modes, a la Bach and other contemporaries were presented. Some performances were really outstanding especially as to the stage presentation and music. One group was comprised of one solo or lead saxophone, with four backup saxes, that “swung” in beat to the music, somewhat akin to the Commodores of a few years past, dance step and rhythm etc. Trombones, baritones and other brass instruments, and a trio of stringed instruments compared well with a terrific guitar renditidti that was done in very skilled manner, style and performance wise. Congratulations to all composers and performers, as well as their professors. Hosted by Mike Chandler and Rejoice 100.9 Gospel Radio station, the concert featured groups such as The Sensational Nightingales, Moments of Glory, Jimmy Hicks, and the Elizabeth City State University Choir. “It was a very spirit- filled night and we are so grateful to Mike Chandler for helping us raise this money,” one member of the University Choir said. The audience stomped and clapped as Jimmy Hicks and the University Choir proclaimed “the devil don’t like me cause I’m blessed like that!” Soloists Jeffery Robinson and Courtney Henderson amazed the audience as the University Choir sang their rendition of “Order My Steps.” The Elizabeth City State University Choir is also preparing for a great experience next spring in Nigeria. “I’m so excited and nervous at the same time, but it will be a good experience to go to a country where many people would like to go but will probably never get the chance. I’m so glad that I have been given this opportunity,” choir member Lisa Silver said. Under the direction of Professor Billy C. Hines, the University Choir will be preparing soon for this great experience, which will take place in the spring of 2005. Concert at ECSU au ditorium features works by Schumann, Vaughan-Williams Duo performs previously unpub lished works by Vaughan-Williams By Fae Deaton Staff writer Monday night, October 25,2004 at 7:30 PM, in the Floyd L. Robinson auditorium, Drs. Weaver and Heilman provided a delightful evening of beautifully rendered works by Marin Marais, Robert Schumann, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Elliott Carter and Percy Grainger. The several works were gently delivered with much sensitivity on the part of both artists. It is not often that we have the opportunity to be treated to such lovely presentations offered to the small, though very appreciative audience. The Program notes helped to give insight into the history of the works, and the times in which it/ they were written. The Romance by Vaughn-Williams, the notes said, were discovered with other unpublished manuscripts among the composer’s papers after his death. The notes assisted in having a frame of reference for the music performed. Both Weaver a d Heilman were a delight to see perform. The interplay between the viola and the complimentary melodies on the piano evidenced the skills of Dr. Weaver and Professor Heilman. Even if you were not familiar with the works, you could not miss the beauty of Dr. Michael Weaver Viola Dr. Mary Heilman P)ano Photos courtesy of performers the renditions and the talent of the performers. Let us hope it will not be long till we are given this gift again. Thank you. Dr. Weaver and Dr. Heilman. Dear Lisa My boyfriend got a job offer in LA three weeks ago. I was very upset about it, but I finally realized this was his life. We were engaged and I thought he would be alright with a long-distance relationship. I know I’m a faithful person and I trusted him completely. I even told him I would fly to LA twice a month to be with him. He was okay with that and he even offered to come visit me. The day before Valentines he called me sad on the phone. He told me he didn’t believe in long-distant relationships and it wasn t going to work. So he dumped me! I was confused, a couple of days ago he couldn’t wait for me to come see him in LA and now he was dumping me. Right before he left, he called me telling me when he comes back things between us will continue. Now I’m even more confused. He has been gone a week and I haven’t heard from him yet and I don’t think I will. He has to come back eventually because his family lives in the same city I do. Should I forget about this guy and go on with hiy life or wait to see what happens when he comes back? Dumped before Valentine’s Dear Dumped, Getting dumped is bad enough, but getting dumped by a guy too cheap to buy a Valentine’s gift is even worse! You say your boyfriend took a job in LA, and he was OK with you flying to LA to be with him twice a month? Well I hate to teU y ou, but he was planning to break up with you long before Valentine’s Day. The writing was on the wall when he got the job offer. And when he decided to move away and take it, without including you, he was already making the break. You say you were engaged, but I’m wondering how he viewed your relationship. Being engaged means an intention to get married, and planning your future together. The only future this guy was committed to was his own. Did he actually ask you to marry him? Or was it just an assumption after going together for some time. I’m sure he was sad when he caUed you to break up because he probably does have feelings foryou. But not strong enough feelings to marry you. (And definitely not strong enough feelings to keep from being such a thoughtless jerk that he didn’t mind poisoning Valentine’s Day for you for the next few years.) Valentine’s Day only brought the issue to a head. The prospect of having to actuaUy buy you a present or say something sweet in a mushy card forced him to teU you what he had known forsome time- the relationship was over. And he took the chicken’s way out by doing it over the phone. I can understand your confusion when he was all excited to see you only a few days earlier, but being excited about spending a weekend with you, especially if it includes sex, is very different than being thrilled to spend a lifetime with you. Should you forget about him and go on with your life? Most definitely. Will he ever come back to you? Perhaps. But the last thing you want to do is sit around waiting. If he’s the right guy, he’s looking for a womaawho has her own fabulous Ufe with or without him. So you need to get started creating one, post haste. And if he’s the wrong guy, you’ll have a fab life, and you’ll attract the kind of man you deserve. The kind of man who flies from LA to see you, not the kind who expects you to always come to see him. Be thankful you didn’t marry this emotional wimp who breaks up over the phone and is too cheap to spring for 20 bucks worth of roses. Buy yourself a nice box of chocolates, lick your wounds (and your fingers) and move on. Kisses, Lisa Dating expert Lisa Daily is the author of Stop Getting Dumped!
