The Compass/May 2005 Page 7 Honors ceremony awards outstanding students By Maurice Wilkerson Stajf Writer On Thursday, April 21, an Honors Convocation was held in the Floyd L. Robinson Auditorium to acknowledge students, mainly seniors who excelled in their various departments. For most, their honors were the highest of their college careers. Parents and friends filled up the auditorium as the honorees walked up and received their awards. Every department at ECSU had numerous awards for seniors who received different scholarships and who maintained the highest grade point averages in their departments. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority along with the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority gave out scholarships for the two young women with the highest grade point average. 44 Be proud of ECSU, because people at other schools will look down on you because of where you came from. The keynote speaker was Nakeshia Syler, a graduate of ECSU who graduated Cumma Sum Laude and then attended Howard school of Law, where she finished sixth in her class. When asked about how she felt speaking to people coming from ECSU, Syler said, “It was extremely exciting being back home delivering a speech.” Syler’s main point of emphasis to the seniors was to “Be proud of ECSU, because people at other schools will look down on you because of where you came from.” After the speech the seniors were acknowledged for their focus and determination. David Gray, Jean Jackson, Don Morring, and Jeffrey Wood received the highest honor of all, the ECSU scholars’ blazers for maintaining a GPA of 3.8 for at least six semesters. After all the awards were given Chancellor Mickey Burnim congratulated the recipients. The day ended with a dinner held for the honorees. It was a day for the seniors to remember. “I think it is something special to know that you are being recognized for your achievements, academically,” said senior Scottie Alston. A month of smiles! Jackson ECSU fraternity celebrades founding week By Samuel Bennett Staff Writer On April 18-22, the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi held their annual Kappa Week celebrating their founding charter week on the campus of Elizabeth City State University. There were a variety of events throughout the week ranging from expressing talents to engaging in extreme parties. “We appreciate everyone who came out to show Kappa Alpha Psi support,” Marvin Jackson, a new brother of the Epsilon Alpha Chapter, said. “Kappa Week means a lot to us celebrating our founders and founding charter week here at ECSU. Everything was a success and we look forward to more weeks like this in the years to come.” Monday night at 7 pm the Apollo Amateur Night included everything from poems, to dancing and singing. There was a cash prize awarded to the wiijner following the contest. Tuesday was all about tlje women with the “TRL” Womien’s Appreciation Day at the bowling Center. This included all types of pampering from massaging feet, back and hands to simply feeding them fruit. Later that night there was an “Emeril Live” Midnight Breakfast at Viking Village. Wednesday is when it really heated up with the “B-Ball Rock-N-Jock Greek Basketball Tournament” at Williams Hall. The Deltas and the Sigmas won the single elimination tournament and took home nice trophies for their hard work and support. A little later that night around 10 pm there was an “American Idol” Karaoke Night at Levels. This was a night sat aside for the relaxation and enjoyment of the talents within the community. On Thursday at 7pm there was a “QVC” auction at the Williams Hall Gymnasium in which, the new ladies of Delta Sigma Theta were auctioned off. The Deltas stole the show and transferred it to the 10 pm “Krimson and Kream Klassic” after party at The Albemarle Lanes here in Elizabeth City. On campus worship service features relaxed atmosphere Husband and wife team lead ministry By Nancy Wilson Staff Writer Pastors Timothy and Kathryn Stallings are a husband and wife team who lead New Geheration Campus Ministries and Family Prayer and Praise Worship Center, a service offered to students as well as to the community every Sunday in EUzabeth City State University’s Moore Hall Auditorium. The Stallings’ first began holding services in the auditorium in 2002 with only five members. However, today New Generation and Family Prayer and Praise Worship Center average a yearly membership of between 70 to 80 members. One of the things that make the individualized services attractive to students is the fact that they do not have to dress up in their Sunday finery, as some are required to do at other churches, instead, they can come as they are. New Generation and Family Prayer are “two separate entities,” Stallings said. The Family Prayer and Praise Worship Center is a church organization that, as Reverend Timothy StaUings said, “Is about having religious activities on campus, to be a place of refuge in a time of trouble,” which it does by providing activities that consist of visiting local retirement homes, attending meetings, pizza parties and campus revivals. “New Generation is a very good place to be. You can grow there, you can learn, you can advance spiritually,” said Levi Peebles, a psychology major and member of New Generation. New Generation has featured ECSU staff and faculty as speakers including Dr. Barbina Houston Black, associate director of admissions and Dr. Margery Coulson-Clark, Assistant Professor in the political science department. “I found it to be very uplifting, the fact that students can show up and not worry about what they’re wearing,” Said Coulson- Clark. Students display sites at showcase By Nate Rhone Staff Writer Elizabeth City State University held a Website Design Showcase, designed to allow students taking courses in the communications field to be able to display their WebPages, on Wednesday, April 13 during the Spring Arts Festival. Students taking Advanced Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design and other courses in the communication field were there to show their work. Kimberly Murphy was one the students that displayed her website at the showcase. “I think it is very useful to have a webpage because it is a good way for potential employers to get your information,” Murphy said. According Susan Peck, one of the spectators on hand, employers are looking more into those with websites because “they can get a sense of who you are before meeting you.” Some courses at ECSU require that you build a webpage. Dr. John Luton a professor at ECSU in the Language, Literature, and Communications department is one who gives the option but strongly recommends it. “It represents the students work in a professional way,” Luton said. Damon Nollan, the ECSU webmaster, was also one of the spectators at the showcase. He said he was pleased to see the Nate Rhone, left and Kimberly Murphy, above, work on creating their personal websites. interest that the students have in web technology. “A website is a tool” Nollan said. “It levels the playing field.” According to Nollan, building a website could help a student coming from a small institution look just as prestigious as one from a big institution, adding that that he would love to see educators develop a program for those outside of the arts and communications majors to be able to learn some of the techniques involved in web designing.
