Elizabeth City, NC May 6, 2006 Senior Edition Bronx Making By Matthew Rascoe Editor SPORIS The Compass Carlos Gutierrez Photo by University Marketing and Relations With his Dominican accent, outstanding academic performance, and seemingly unparalleled athletic talent, Carlos Gutierrez is one of the most recognizable student athletes on campus. Gutierrez, a senior Physical Education major, is a native of the Bronx, New York. Because Gutierrez is Hispanic (Dominican Republic), stereotypes have been a part of his life, and they only been intensified by his playing baseball. Baseball is the number sport played among Hispanics. Gutierrez, however, sees the stereotypes as a positive motivation for his playing. “[Playing baseball] comes naturally. It’s the number one sport in my country. I’m hoping to become the next Marmy Ramirez,” he said. Gutierrez was last year’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association player of the year. He finished last year with an impressive .413 batting average and tied for first for most homeruns with five during the regular season. With achievements like these, Gutierrez is well on his way to becoming one of the next great Hispanic players. Gutierrez’s remarkable talent is only accentuated by his motivation. Aside form his love of the sport, Gutierrez said his family and hopes of making it to the pros isomDer His Mark is what drives him to play. “I want to get my family out of New York, you Imow. Everybody got a dream,” Gutierrez said. Off the field Gutierrez is also superstar. Gutierrez is member of the Global Leadership program, and holds a 3.4 G.P.A. he says, that finding the balance between academics and sports has been easy. “Some athletes try to put too much dedication to sports. Class isn’t hard, so just put dedication to both,” he said After the ECSU baseball team won the CIAA Championship last year, Gutierrez was featured in the ECSU magazine, on the cover of several of the campus’ brochures, and even appeared on the school website. Gutierrez has quickly become a media icon for ECSU. When asked about all the attention, a humble Gutierrez said he’s taking it in all in stride. “I’m taking it like a regular student because that’s what I am.” Top Football Recruit Come to ECSU Football Team By Micaela Morris Staff Writer Five Northeastern High School football players have signed national letters of intent to play college football next year. Including one who is coming to Elizabeth City State University, Leroy Brown. Leroy Brown will be playing defensive linebacker for our “Mighty Vikings”, of ECSU. Coach Waveriy Tillar from Elizabeth City State said, “ He can come in right away for us, he is an impact player.” Brown, uncertain until the last minute about where he would sign was swayed by a close family member who attends ECSU. Soon to be defensive linebacker, Leroy Brown said, “ I think it is good for me to be on such a good team, I can help bring a strong frontline and break up running plays.” Coach Waveriy Tillar at ECSU also had something to say about his new hot shot kid, “He has the tenacity that we’re looking for.” Brown will start football practice for the new season this fall for the ECSU Vikings L I Z A IB ITY ECSU !H)€e ECUJ yU^NGS SCrWBAU.
