Such songs include “I Believe I Can Fly”, “You Saved Me”, and now “Rise Up.” “Rise Up” was written in tribute to the victims of the April 16 Virginia Tech shooting. The song will be released digitally on May 15. All of the proceeds wil go to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. The Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund was created to provide assistance to the victims of the families, as well as grief counseling and other needs for those affected by the shootings. Dr. Gale Isaacs, the department chair, presided over the prgram and called upon Dr. Venus Deonanan to welcome everyone in attendance. Afterwards Dr. Isaacs stated the purpose of the event. Several profes sors and three students were honored with Departmental awards. Certificates of appreciation were given to students Jarrae Hen ley and Shakara Wray. Student Yolanda Johnson was presented with the Student Departmental Service Award. The following professors were presented with awards. Outstand ing Junior Faculty Award, Kip Branch; Outstand ing Teaching Award, Dr. John Luton; Outstanding Teaching Award Part- Time Faculty, Albert Morrison;Outstanding Faculty Award, Dr. Joseph Li sowski ;Outstanding Faculty Service Award Dr. Jose Gil and Dr. AWARDS 2007 Samuel Moore; Peer Rec ognition Award Dr. John Luton. Professor Kip Branch was also pre sented with the Student’s Choice Award, which was voted on by students in the LLC department, as its name implies. This was the first year such an award has been presented. The most emo tional award however was presented to Mr. Per- nell Bartlett. Dr. Isaacs presented the Man-of- the-Hour Award to Mr. Bartlett with tears in her eyes. “I feel like a proud mother,” said Isaacs. Isaacs continued praising and thanking Mr. Bartlett for his efforts in the of fice, and ended the emo tional speech by saying, “He is the glue that holds this department together.” Dr. Glenda Griffin and Dr. Venus Deonanan then presented Dr. Gale Isaacs with gifts of appre ciation. Griffin, sincerely expressed her gratitude for the work Isaacs has done in the department. Dr. Keane-Dawes, the Dean of the LLC Depart ment, was also in atten dance and among those that congratulated Dr. Isaacs on a great year and a job well done.
