4 THE COMPASS - FALL 2009 AROUNDTHE CAMPUS LIVING EVERYDAY WITH HISTORY As students on the campus of Elizabeth City State University, we sleep, eat, participate in different activities, and attend classes in various halls. Many halls have names ot individuals who played an important role in the development of the university. Some students live in Bias hall, Butler Hall, Doles Hall, Hugh Cale Hall, Mitchell-Lewis Hall, or Wamack Hall. Hugh Cale Hall was buih in 19S6 and was named after Hugh Cale, who introduced the bill establishing the university. Bias Hall, named after was built in 1938. Bias served as the second president of Ehzabeth city State University from July 1, 1928 until his death on July 15 1939. Butler Hall was built in 1924 and was named after John Henry Manning Butler in 1983. He was the second teacher of ECSU. Doles Hall was built in 1956 and was named after Rev. John Thomas Doles and Mary Deloatch Doles. Mitchell-Lewis Hall was built in 1969 and was named after Edna Harris Mitchell in 1987. Edna Mitchell was a faculty member in the early years of the university. Timothy Hiram Wamack was also another faculty member who made major contributions to the school. Wamack Hall was named after him in 1981. Wamack Hall was originally built in 1969. One of the most important buildings on the campus is theThorpe Administration Building. Built in 1987, theThorpe Administration Building was named after Dr. Marion DennisThorpe. Dr.Thorpe was the sixth president and the very first Chancellor of Elizabeth City State University. The Kermit E. White Building is where students are directed to this building to take care of their financial obligations and any other responsibilities such as housing, healthcare, and classes at the start of the school year. This building is the K.E. White Building named after Kermit Earle White, who was the first black trustee chairmen of ECSU. The building was built in 1982. The Cardwell-Hoffler Infirmary was built in 1952. It is where students go for all health reasons. The Infirmary was named after George Washington Cardwell and Ernest Linwood Hoffler in 1973. Cardwell was the universities physician and Hoffler was a trustee of the university at the time. The Vaughan Center is where students attend basketball games; take a dip in the pool, and workout in the gym. Built fully in 1977, The Vaughan Center was named after Robert Louis Vaughan. Vaughan was a former professor ot physical education, athletic director, and head basket ball coach. The students of Elizabeth City State University call it the “CAFE”, short for cafeteria or Bedell Hall. Bedell Hall was built in 1969 and was named after the former food services supervisor, Mamie Bedell in 1986. If you have a package or want to send a letter to someone, students complete these tasks at Ridley Hall. Built in 1969, the building received its name from Walter Nathaniel Ridley. He and his wife Henrietta Bonaparte Ridley served ECSU faithfully. Dr. Ridley served as the fifth president and third president emeritus of ECSU, and she served as the First Lady as well as the student union advisor. Whenever a student wants a quiet place to go and read a book or if they want to enjoy a play, they turn to the G.R. Little Library and Theater. Named after George Roscoe Little Sr., the building was built in 1966. George Little Sr. was a former trustee of the school. Home to most of the school parties, the radio station and other student activities is Williams Hall. Named after Sidney DavidWilliams, This building was built in 1949. Sidney Williams was the forth president of the school and the second president emeritus. There are classes in Lester Hall, Moore Hall, Lane Hall, Johnson Hall, the Trigg Building, Dixion Hall, Griffin Hall, or the Jenkins Science Complex. Home to all the Language, Literature and Communication students, Johnson Hall stands in the heart of the campus. Built in 1966, Johnson Hall was named after Evelyn Adelaide Johnson. Johnson was the first professor Emerita at ECSU making many contributions to the music department. Lester Hall is where most of the mathematics and computer science students go. Built in 1952, Lester hall is named after Aurelius R Lester known for being a faculty member and registrar. Moore Hall was built in 1922. Named after Peter Wedderick Moore, the first president and first president -emeritus; this is the home of most freshmen students going through general studies. Moreover, the house of the School of Business and Economics and Social Science Department. There’s one thing that the recycling program, talent search program, safety offices and aviation science program all have in common. They are all housed in Lane Hall. Built in 1910, it is believed to be the oldest building on campus. Named after Frances Lane Bias, the wife of the second president of the school John Henry Bias. Built in 1939, the Trigg Building was named after Harold Leonard Trigg. He was the third president of Elizabetli City State University. Today, the H.L. Trigg building is the home to career services and the office of residence life. Clarence Walton Griffin was a former trustee chairman. Griffin Hall, home of the education and psychology department, was named after him. Dixon Hall, home to industrial technology students, is named after former trustee, McDonald Dixon. Dixon Hall was built in 1977. Named after the second chancellor of Elizabeth City State University, Dr. Jimmy Raymond Jenkins, the Jenkins Sciences complex is the building that houses the department of Biology Technology, Geological, Environmental and Marine Science. The Jenkins Science Complex also houses to the schools planetarium. As students travel from building to building, dorm to dorm, they travel to a piece of Elizabeth City State University’s history every day. Every day is history.
