Black Militant Is A '‘White” Name
There is no such thing as a Black Militant. The term Black Mili
tant is nothing more than a tag or label imposed upon the brothers
and sisters who have expressed themselves vigorously against the
status quo (the system), which is white racist.
It is very important for us to understand that the status quo and
white racism are the same. To further explain, the whites who con
trol the religious institutions, the educational institutions, the judiciary
system, the pig (police) departments, the armed services, and also
control the standards of journalism and the news media are the basis
for institutional racism and white propaganda.
Journalists and the news media are very, very important because
they control the thinking of most of the people. They set the stand
ards of living for most people also. Let us think in terms of how the
news media controls the thinking of the people, especially many
black people. The term “militant” as it was originally used did not
have any color. It was used in reference to students and peace people
who denounced war in Viet Nam. It was also used in conjunction
with Black people protesting to gain equality.
White Term
This indicates that at the outset both Black and whites seeking
to cure the ills of this racist society were placed in the same cate
gory, as “militants.” However, the word is being used more and
more to describe Black people in struggle for liberation. Since white
journalists and white-controlled news media decided to do this, every
itime one sees the term “militant,” a Black face appears in his mind.
Therefore, the term militant is now considered a Black thing.
Consequently, the name of the game is white public relations
(white propaganda), a vehicle used to maintain the white status quo
(system) and eliminate all elements seeking overt change regardless
of how humane. In order for the white public relations (white propa
ganda) vehicle to maintain the white status, it is important to them that
the majority of the people are against those Black people who are
seeking revolutionary change against the system of injustices, unequal
representation, oppression and exploitation of the Black people and
people of color.
This is done by attacking personal images, distorting their choices
of words or terminology, confusing the real issues, and above all, by i
giving white meanings to terms and interpretation. Here are some
typical examples:
A brother who openly denounces whitey system of oppression and
exploitation and informs other brothers and sisters about the in
justices and the hardship of the system, is described as a militant by
the white news media standards.
Afro-Naturals
Also, brothers and sisters who sport Afro-natural hair-dos are
considered militants. Why? Because the white press has seen fit to
exploit these hairdos, making them trademarks of militancy. Even
many Negroes shake in their skins when they are in the company of j
brothers and sisters who have refused to continue the physical image
that whitey has dictated to Blacks for centuries and have deniggerated
themselves and have become their natural selves by wearing their hair
natural. This is so because most Negroes have accepted the white news
media image of a militant.
In other words, any time a Black person does not adheYe to some
whitey standards, he becomes an official Black Militant.
The Effects
The damaging factor here is that many young Blacks who have
become race conscious become confused. These young Blacks should
begin to read all the Black literature possible. And they should at
tend all lectures and the likes in order to gain clear thinking about
the Black revolution. They should think big and study the workings
of the enemy (system) and capitalize on the weakness with one thing
in mind, and that is to destroy for the best interest of the Black man
and people of color. Then those Blacks are not a so-called “Black mili
tant.” Instead, they are by definition people who are in the same
struggle for liberation, a Black revolutionary.
Political Implications
The white news media attempts to destroy the minds of Black peo
ple and people of color and attempt to program the remaining part
of their minds to think as the system (the white man) would like
them to think that is everything white is good and should be accepted.
Black brothers and sisters who understand the workings of the
(system) of the enemy do not attempt to live up to the white status
quo standards. Instead, they develop, teach, and live by standards
that they define, which are revolutionary and humane. The white
status quo does not like to refer to those thinking Blacks as Revolu
tionaries because they know that you are not a real Revolutionary un
less you have determined values that are contrary to his values.
The white status quo also uses this term “Black Militant” as a
counter Revolutionary tactic, hoping that by calling some real Black
Revolutionaries (Bro. H. Rap Brown, Bro. Malcolm X, Bro. Carmichael)
militants that would divorce them from revolutionaries throughout the
world.
The Black Revolutionary at this particular time is not really con
cerned about what whitey calls him. He has learned to use these
methods in the most sophisticated way to teach potential leaders of
revolution various strategies in order to accomplish a successful Black
revolution in America and the world.
Brothers and sisters, let us not become programed and blinded by
whitey’s news media. Remember the white press has never called
George Wallace or Lester Maddox a white militant.

State College Host
To Computer
Seminar
A data processing seminar fund
ed by the federal government will
be held at Winston-Salem State
College June 23 through 27.
Bill Lakey, director of comouter
operations for the Integon Corp
oration, will direct the seminar.
Other consultants will be Jack
K. Roof, assistant director of data
processing for the Catholic Uni
versity of America in Washington,
D. C., and Joseph White, data
processing manager of WSSC.
Designed to increase awareness
of the potential of data processing,
the seminar is open to any em
ployed person.
“Previous knowledge of data
processing is not required,” said
Dr. W. Archie Blount, director of
WSSC’s extended services division,
which is sponsoring the program.
“If, for example. I’m a busi
ness man or an office manager
and know nothing about data pro
cessing, I could go to the seminar,
tell the consultants about my office
and my needs, and then be shown
how data processing could work
for me,” Blount said.
The program will include group
discussion and workshop sessions,
films, and a tour of the Integon
Corporation computer center.
There is no fee for the seminar,
but a $29 charge will be made for
those people taking food and lodg
ing at the college for the week.
Participants may register for the
entire seminar or for the single
day when Roof will speak and
when the Integon computer tour
will be held.
This will be the first such semi
nar held at Winston-Salem State,
although the college has offered
several night classes in data pro
cessing for the past three years.
Future seminars in data process
ing are being considered by the
college.
The program is funded by the
U. S. Department of Health, Edu
cation and Welfare, under Title I
of the Higher Education Act of
1965.
Wake Up Brothers and Sisters,
Stop Fooling Yourselves
Joseph Arthur De Gobineau states in his “Inequality of the Human
Race,” that a Black Man is a mere animal without the ability to
think; moreover, he has instincts and highly developed senses which
are common characteristics of animals. I am inclined to agree with him
to the extent that many of my “brothers and sisters refuse to use
their ability to think. Furthermore, they are in complete agreement
with the “pigs” concept of the ruling class or his superiority. This
reluctance causes our people to be disunited in our constant and des
perate struggle for equality and the inalienable rights supposedly
given to us by our creator.
I say unto all my “brothers and sisters”: Wake Up and obtain
our Liberation. Yet remember that there is, in reality, only one way
to obtain true equality and liberation according to the ways and stand
ards of white society. This is through pride and complete respect for
Black Womanhood on the part of the black man. The “black woman”
must possess pride and admiration for the Black Man.
Moreover, we must seek and get an accurate knowledge of our
selves and realize the realities of life. Through Black—moreover, all—
history, we can see that “Black Power” is a must.
Unfortunately, many of my Black Brothers and Sisters of today
are confused about Black Power or Black Nationalism. Black Power
is a statement with a variety of concepts, therefore, it is highly and
most often confused or mistaken for reverse racism. Fortunately, my
comrades and I are proud to say that this inaccuracy is very easily
cleared up.
Black Power is complete equality consisting of all the inalienable
rights therewith. It is also like a third world wherein Blacks of this
so-called world realize their common struggle throughout society. We
realize that the only means of "Black Liberation” is through Black
Awareness and Identity with an adequate concept of Black History,
thus giving us separation rather than integration. If one studies his
tory with an accurate conception of the United States constitution, he
will see all the lies told therein. Furthermore, America on her statue
of liberty, says to other countries, “Give me your tired, hungry, and
heavy harden.” (sic) How can she take in the unfortunate people of
others lands when her Black inhabitants are starving daily from the
lack of food, equality, liberation, and knowledge of themselves. We
all know for a fact that the “pig” isn’t going to give anyone credit
for anything. For example, we have always been told that the first
Black Man in America came as a slave in 1619. However, it has been
proven that this statement is a lie. Our people, through research, now
know as a historical fact that Estavanico, a member of DeSoto’s expe
dition, ventured to North America, where he died, under the leader
ship of Friar Marcos De Niza. Furthermore, there was a Black Man
with Columbus on his ventures by the name of Alonzo. There were
many slaves in America that made contributions to the white man’s
culture; unfortunately, they didn’t receive credit for their achieve
ments. Moreover, the Emancipation Proclamation was designed to lib
erate the Blacks from the bounds of slavery; thus fulfilling the doc
trine of the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created
equal.” Nevertheless, our people are still in bondage in the form of
civilized slavery.
Now, I ask you, my Brothers and Sisters, is this justice, equality,
or true liberation? The answer we all know is a very loud, resounding
No. Therefore, I say to you, let us no longer be an instrument for the
“pigs” but let all of us be men and women, according to our definitions
and standards tor the two words.
I leave you with these questions: Is pride, virtue, and dignity more
important than materialistic wealth? Do my children have to grow
up in Hell? What am I going to do in order to alleviate the difficultities
of life and reality?

Upward Bound
Refunded
The Upward Bornd project spon
sored by Winston-Salem State for
the past three years has been re
funded for 19S9-70 by the U. S. Of
fice of Economic Opportunity.
The new grant is $93,633. As the
sponsoring institution, the college
will add an amount equal to 20 per
cent of the federal grant, bringing
the total project funding to more
than $112,000.
Since 1986 the federal govern
ment has awarded approximately
$117,000 to W. S. S. C. for Upward
13ound.
Upward, Bound, according to W.
.Archie Blount, WSSC vice presi
dent and project director, is a pro
gram for “low income high school
students who have demonstrated
college potential, but who need rno-
tivation or assistance in entering
post-secondary education.”
The program hosted by Winston-
Salem State draws on students
from Forsyth, Stokes and Surry
counties. About 80 students are ex
pected to enroll this summer.
This year's session will run from
June 16 through July 25, with a
week-long orientation for staff pre
ceding the actual program.
The curriculum will give major
emphasis to communicative and
computational skills and will also
cover the sciences, physical educa
tion and social studies.
The program will be staffed by
ten student tutors and 14 teach
ers and administrators to be drawn
from WSSC and the high schools
from which Upward Bound stu
dents come.
