PAGE TEN THE NEWS ARGUS NOVEMBER, 1969 Sports Beat with Terry Howard, co-editor The Rams have hung up the cleats and donned the sneakers, and once again it’s basketball time at Winston-Salem State University. After a disappointing season on the gridiron, the Rams now turn their sights on basketball, with hopes of picking up where they left off last March. Winning bas ketball has been a tradition here at Winston-Salem, and this year promises to be no exception. After a fair 14-14 record last year, the Rams have their goals set on building up the powerhouse that has endured here throughout the last decade. 6’8” John Lathan will head the returning lettermen which also in cludes Allan McManus, Vaughn Kimbrough and David Spell. Hust ling Donald “Duck” Williams will head the group of forwards which has been strengthened by the addi tion of freshmen Carson Hankins and Bobby Garner. Head Coach Clarence Gaines will be faced with the task of put ting together a squad to compete with the likes of last year’s champ ion, Elizabeth City, and always strong Norfolk State. Elizabeth City has four starters returning from a team which finished with a 26-3 record last year, including a setback by the Rams. For the first time since the days of the “Pearl,” the Rams will have depth at all positions. At this point, guards seem to be the Rams’ strongest, position with the likes of Kimbrough and Reg Scales. New comers at that position include Roger Wells and Roosevelt Chavis Wells played his prep ball at noted Laurinburg Institute which has produced the likes of Univer sity of North Carolina’s Charlie Scott. ^ Chavis played his ball for State |3-A Champion Hillsborough Orange and is noted for his shooting and defensive prowess. The player to watch this year is freshman forward Ralph Jones, who will be fighting for a starting berth for the Rams. Jones has looked good in pre-season scrim mage, and should add depth to the forward position. Coach Gaines says this year’s team is not as strong as previous Ram teams, but with the talent he has, the Rams are more than likely to be one of the stronger teams of the CIAA. In his twenty- three years as head mentor at Win- ston-Salem State, Coach Gaines has compiled a 440-182 win-lost record, to put him among the leaders of winning coaches in the nation. Maryland State, with the Ford brothers, Jake, an all-American, returning, will field one of the finer teams in the conference. Student support is a necessity for the Rams, and if you want to see basketball at its finest, drop by either the Coliseum or Whit aker Gymnasium this season. Smith de fense, a high scoring offense, and rain spoiled homecoming activi ties for the Winston-Salem State University Rams at Bowman Gray Stadium. The Golden Bulls, one of the top teams in the CIAA, proved it by stopping the Rams 30-6 in a game played in rain and mud. Smith’s strong running game was literally stopped by the hard rain and mud. William Dusenbury, the CIAA leading rusher, was held to a mere 23 yards in 10 carries, and ithe Golden Bulls rushed for a total of only 100 yards. HADLEY Smith’s quarterback, Elroy Dun can, had trouble with his short passes in the first half. He hit on two of his first twelve attempts. But most of his success was with the long bomb. The Bull ace fired three touchdown passes. His under study, Donald Littlejohn, passed for another. The Golden Bulls scored the first tirpe they got the ball. They drove 46 yards in six plays after receiv ing a Ram punt. The Rams got on the scoreboard shortly afterwards. With fourth and five. Smith was forced to punt. On the ensuing play. Ram tackle Reynold Duncan broke through the Smith line and blocked the kick, picked the ball up, and scampered thirty yards for the score. The Bulls jumped on the score board again with the aid of an other miscue. A bad snap from center forced Sherwood Kasey to run on a fourth down situation. His attempt failed and the Bulls took over, first and iten on the Ram 12. Bro.
