PAGE EIGHT THE NEWS ARGUS NOVEMBER, 1969 Dear Myrt Dear Myrt, I think I am in love but I am not sure. How can I tell if I really am? Con Fused Dear Con, This is an age old question that cannot be answered precisely. When love hits you, you will know it. (and I don’t mean a person named love). Does your liver quiver? Do your eyes sparkle? Does your heart skip a few beats? Do your toes twinkle? Do you get goose pimples on the tip of your nose? If you get any of these sensations I would say that you are in love. If you feel completely at ease and very happy then you may be in love, but don’t fool yourself. Dear Myrt, I have a unique problem . . . foot odor. When I am with my man I am so tense and nervous because when we get intimate he might ask me to take my shoes off. What should I do? Shoes Tied Dear Shoe, Yours is a problem that any modem day girl can handle. I would shudder to thmk of you getting, intimate with your shoes on. So to keep you from this em barrassing situation I shall give you a few pointers. First of all, wash your feet at least twice a day rubbing them with foot powder after each washing. 2) Air your shoes daily. 3) While in the house, wear only your bedroom slippers. 4) Wash your stockings after a couple of wearings. The next time you are with your man and TCB, take your shoes off with pride also. pear Myrt, } During my stay here on campus 1! have been completely ignored by the young men. I am not the ugliest girl in the world, but I would never win a beauty contest either. What should I do to be noticed by the young men? Ig Nored Dear Ig, I noticed that you did not men tion your personality, and that does have a great deal to do with acquiring and keeping friends. You could groom yourself and get in the know with whats happening around you. Join various clubs and organizations which will foster new friendships. You can also take pride in your appearance and wear clothes that are appropriate for the occasion. You should hook your man soon. Good luck! Dear Myrt, I have this problem that has bothered me for some time. I am very much in love with this guy and he loves me to. There isn’t anything in this world I wouldn’t do for him. My problem is this. Although he tells me he loves me I am sometimes in doubt by other little things he says. We have a great deal in common even though we are from totally different walks of life, and he’s older and much more experienced than I am. He is a very sweet and charming per son, but also very sensitive. I sincerely believe that he loves me very much, but I have never known a man like this before in my life and I am afraid to lose him. What shall I do? Perplexed Dear Perplexed, You should watch out. If this man loves you, but constantly leaves you in doubt then there may be someone else in his life. Men have been known (women to) to love more than one woman at a time. On the other hand falling in love scares the hell out of some men. Maybe he is the type who is afraid to show you all of his love because he isn’t ready yet. I do hope you don’t lose him but be pre pared for the worst. To cfa y ivMp I f-A iKcLba-u-^^^crqip rf,. SWING SCHOOL Swing School, which is a presen tation of how the classroom situa tion will be in the near future, was presented by the members of Gam ma Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The presenta tion was given at the Memorial In dustrial School. The play was well received and enjoyed by all those in attendance. Everything that was done or said in the classroom was accompanied by music from the piano. The teacher could not control the stu dents who played and danced all through the lesson. The time came for the students to receive their physical examinations. They were to be given by Doctor Painshaker, Psychologist Blacktongue, and Nurse Heartstrong. Because the students would not give their full cooperation, the examination turned out to be a terrible situa tion. They merely made fun of the examiners and scored on them whenever given the chance. The climax of the program was the song period presented after the skit. The members of the sorority sang several songs for the chil dren. After the songs, the sorors talked to the children and pre sented Christine Williams with gifts. Christine is the child the sorority is sponsoring. Mrs. Daniels, the advisor, ac companied the Deltas to the Me morial Industrial School. gyjUCT.ft/ RoftRO AME.RICAA/ history "ONE NIGHT AFFAIR" Do the Deltas have “soul?” This question was answered in the af firmative without a shadow of a doubt at the “One Night AfEair” sponsored by Gamma Phi Chap ter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The atmosphere was a psy chedelic array with the colors of the rainbow emphasizing “red and white.” The setting really gave one the impression of a one night affair. The music was furnished by the one and only Issac Hayes, Kool and the Gang, the Supremes, the Temptations, The Soul Children, Friends of Distinction and many other fine artists. We are looking forward to your support at the many other events sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. TRICK OR TREAT AT THE HOSPITAL For the children at Kate Bitting Memorial Hospital, Halloween was full of treats. There was not the familiar scene of witches and goblins in the air. Instead, the members of Gammi Phi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority were on the scene bringing goodies and treats to the children who were unable to participate physi cally in the festivities of Halloween. There were many happy faces waiting eagerly to see what the “trick or treat” bags contained. The children were also given masks to further get them into the Halloween spirit. This affair is one of the annual community projects sponsored by the Sorority. WHO? wHflT DrQ HE SAV? FROM THE KAPPAS To the Black men of Delta Chi, a Kappa man is a “Black” in dividual. He is one who is radical enough to stand up and shout, if that’s what it takes, and who be lieves in himself as a man. He is aware of himself, his history, and is proud of his heritage. He strives for achievement in every field of endeavor without becoming so middle class that he forgets his fellow brother. He realizes that there is power only in unity, therefore, he helps his brother rather than harm him. He stands out not because he thinks he is better than anyone else but, because of his sincere concern and dedication to his fel low black brothers. We, the members of Delta Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, say to our fellow brothers at Winston- Salem State University, “fight on, for the black unity and liberation of black people all over the world.” For there is, and always has been a black God watching over you. Power to you, Brothers, Chester Batts HUMAN BONDAGE Since when do you gag and strap human beings during the course of a trial by jury? The recent case involving Black Panther chairman Bobby Seal is a good example of the decay of American justice. Seal’s repeated outbursts during his trial in Chicago to cross ex amine witnesses and defend him self brought out the true animalis tic traits of the American mind. If a dog is disobedient, you har ness him. If a beast from the wil derness shows acts of violence after months of training by his master, then that master reserves the right to cage that beast, But just when do you gag an intelligent human being? Nowhere in the course of history has such inhumane act taken place in a court of the United States. But here in America one can ex pect just about anything. Is this another American act to silence justice? Is this an act to sever all ties between our leaders and followers? Is racism such an integral fiber of the "American mind that it makes man resort to any sadistic measure to shut off a revolutionary movement? As black students and potential leaders of tomorrow, we can no longer adhere to such acts of in justice. We must react now. We must prepare ourselves for that inevitable black-white confronta tion that awaits us all, and be able to deal with the situation before we all are swallowed in the vicious jaws of America’s so-called justice. Terry Howard SEAL WHAT'S GOING ON IN SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES The barriers are down! Colleges that for so long sniffed at the thought of turning co-ed are now going the way of the flesh. By the dozen, men’s and women’s colleges are flinging themselves open to the opposite sex. Here are just a few that have gone co-ed or are planning to: Bennington, Colgate, Franklin and Marshall, George town, Kenyon, Notre Dame, Uni versity of Virginia, Princeton, Wesleyan, Yale, and Vorhees. The reasons for this are simple. Men and women stimulate each other academically and don’t want to be separated during the excit ing college years. Princeton de cided to go co-ed after a study in dicated the school might suffer in competing for students, faculty, and money, if it didn’t. Flip Flop: What’s the best way to teach foreign languages? By the old vo- cabulary-and-grammar method or by the new audio-lingual approach? The arguments seem to be settled because so many schools are now switching to the new method and investing thousands of dollars in language labs. But the whole thing has been blown up again by impor tant research in Pennsylvania. Over a period of two years, two groups of first and second year French and German students were watched. Part of the group was taught by the old method of being given grammar and vocabulary and drilled them on it. The others were taught by the new method, which stresses speaking and gives the students grammar afterwards or lets them figure the sentence out for themselves. Result: The new method is no better, maybe even worse than the old. Pupils in traditional classes exceed^ or equaled pupils in the audio-lin gual classes on all measures. Lan guage labs used only twice a week weren’t very helpful. Talent Search; Wanted: More BLACK citizens to become candidates for local school boards. Who’s suited? Anyone who meets local legal requirements, is intelli gent, has no ax to grind and who is devoted to the idea of a good education for all. Pay? Usually none. Altogether, about 110,380 board members in about 20,000 school districts supervise the spending of over 30 billion dollars a year for education. The quality of the boards needs to be boosted, and the only way to do it is to persuade more people of ability to make themselves available. Does this mean well educated people only? No! What’s needed are well-in formed, interested people. The best way to get them is to go after them, asking local organizations to join the search. Beefed up Social Studies: First, it was new math, the new physics, new physical education, and now the social studies curri culum is getting a much needed overhaul. The world’s major problems lie in the field of social studies: war, hunger, race relations, and over crowded cities. Yet, most schools still offer the same old dry-as- dust history and civics. TV, radio and the auto have made kids fa miliar with the world beyond their own hometown, but most courses underestimate their information and interest, as well as their abili ty to grasp political, social and economical ideas. Most teaching is centered around textbooks that never discuss anything contro versial and so never excite any one’s interest.
