FEBRUARY, 1970 THE NEWS ARGUS PAGE FIVE I I ' - . -»SKSa.TTO. Season's End With a few breaks and fewer turnovers the Winston-Salem State Rams would have been riding high atop the southern division of the CIAA. However, we have had trouble picking up victories on the road. Now we find ourselves fight ing for fourth place in the confer ence race. Last weeks sound 87-62 win over St. Augustine shows the power and balance we have as a team. This victory also showed the great depth we have on the bench with Ralph Jones, Eddie Gregg, and Frank Hadley, to name a few. With such a balanced team Ram coach, C. E. Gaines, can afford to call upon anyone and except an outstanding job. The Rams five losses have come at the hands of powerful Eliza beth City, Fayetteville State, A&T, Norfolk State, and Johnson C. Smith. The combined difference in il ■ '■■'^J.asses 's -3 points, many of which couW Jiu.e gone either way. Allen McManus, *c'i^hT Kim brough, and Donald Williams have thus far paced the Rams' scoring attack. They have received out standing support from leaping Da vid Spell, Gregg, Jones, and the “bench brigade.” Along with Spell, big John La- than has been a key man on the boards. He must be considered one of the better big men in the con ference. Lathan has also begun to excel as a scorer, hitting well from the top of the key and under neath the basket. With the five games remaining, the Rams will have to come up with at least three victories to as sure themselves a berth in the tournament. The Rams will have to face the likes of Elizabeth City, and Shaw University. ECC drop ped the Rams in an earlier meet ing by a score of 115-108. On Wed nesday, Feb. 18, the Rams will travel to Raleigh to face the Shaw Bears in another return game. We all remember that first game. It took three overtimes, and a last second shot by Allen McManus to pull that one out for the Rams. From February 26-28 the annual CIAA tournament will be held at the Greensboro Coliseum. The top four teams from both northern and southern divisions will be rep resented. —Terry Howard SPORTS BEAT with Terry Howard If I were to pick an All-American team right now I, being a Ram partisan, would pick Vaughn Kim brough and Allen McManus at the two guard positions, John Lathan at center, and Donald (Duck) Williams and David Spell at the forward spots. My choice would be made on shooting percentages, rebounding, and overall team play. In these three departments the Rams have excelled beyond perfection, as their record indicates. We have been the victims of poor officiating on our road trips, without which the Rams record would be unblemish ed. As both a Ram partisan and team public relations man, I have been able to observe the Rams in action both at home and on the road. My final analysis of the team’s efforts thus far would be excellent, and I’m sure most of us would agree. With reference to the past decade, the Rams have developed into a basketball dynasty, with coach C. E. (Big House) Gaines as head mentor. Our success be gan in the year 1960 when the Rams compiled a 19-5 season record; ending the season with a victory in the CIAA championship round. The following year the Rams upped their record to 26-5 emerging as both CIAA and NAIA District No. 29 champions. The next two years we amassed records of 24-5, and 23-7 respectively, cap turing the district championship both times. In 1967, referred to as the year of “The Pearl”, Winston-Salem State had its best season ever,, compiling a record of 31-1, and concluding the season by winning the NCAA National Championship. That year two of our starters were drafted in the first round of the National Basketball Association. Earl “The Pearl” Monroe was picked by the Baltimore Bullets, and Jim Reid went to the Phila delphia 76er’s. The following year the Rams dropped to their first losing season in more than twenty years, with a record of ten wins and fourteen defeats. The last year of the decade saw the Rams finish with a 14-14 record to close out an excellent decade of college basket ball. The new decade marks the end of the careers of four players who played on that 1967 championship team. Allen McManus closes out an illustrous career at guard along with Vaughn Kimbrough and the two big men, Donald W'illiams and 6’8” John Lathan. I have reason to believe that this is also the beginning of a new basketball dynasty here at Winston- Salem State. Why? Because we have a great group of freshmen who have the potential to develop into a fine basketball unit. The names of Edward Gregg, BASEBALL TEAM PREPARES FOR OPENER Spring is just around the corner and soon we will hear the familiar crack of the bat as the “Mighty Rams” of Winston-Salem State once again take the field. Under the coaching of Cleo Wallace, the Rams will be host to Hampton Institute here on March 18. Returning lettermen are co captain Lawrence Izzard, Clevell Roseboro, Dallas Grimes, Jonathan Williams, and Harold Hart in the infield. The outfield has lost the “Duck” does his thing! •V -'S.- ' •* - ; ■ ** The student body and athletic department of Winston-Salem State University sadly mourns the death of Hezekiah Daye, who died at his home in Wadesboro, North Carolina. The departed athlete was a defensive back on the fighting Rams football team and a member of the freshman class. Daye died as a result of mortal wounds suffered while spending his Christmas vacation at home. We, the staff members of the News Argus, dedicate this edition to the memory of our former classmate. He will be missed. Ralph Jones, Roosevelt Chavious, Reginald Scales, and Bobby Garner will be heard frequently in the next few years. We can also depend on our masterly coach to recruit some excellent ball players next year. Oh yes, if I had to choose a second All-America team I would choose Reggie (Punch) Scales and Roosevelt Chavious at guards, Bobby (Big G) Garner at center, and Ralph Jones and Eddie Gregg at forwards. And what coach would I choose? Who else but Clarence (Big House) Gaines, the best coach in the CIAA. services of Ronald Brandon and Robin Kirkland, but returning is Michael Hargrove, Billy Richard son. On the mound will be Harold Donavant, Ronnie Hart, James Pickens, and Foster Epps. Coach Wallace encourages all prospective players to'try out for the team. We hope the Rams have a much better team this year than last year. Students, get out and support them. 1970 BASEBALL SCHEDULE MARCH 18—Hampton Institute Home 22—Delaware State Home 23—State Univ.
