OCTOBER, 1973 THE NEWS ARGUS PAGE FIVE Sports Eagles Beat Rams 2-1 and 1 even. This could describe the opening game victory for our univer sity team, if they were competing in boxing. But September 8th, 8:00 p.m. we met the North Carolina Central University Eagles for football. As a Hindu-Guru might say, “if it hadn’t been for that ab stract untangible none in football as points," the comparison might hold true. For two quarters in that game the Big Red Machine could do no wrong. Highlighted by the scrambling antics of junior quarterback Londell McClary and blended in with a surprisingly strong running game behind Cornell Davis, Marvin Morrison and Chico Dunlap the Red Machine was definitely smoking. On defense Nathaniel Goodson, Clar ence Cox, and Curtis Phifler were taking the charge away from the Eagles of fensive line thus cutting down the effec tiveness of their bruising fullback James Smith. A goal line stand at the end of the first half verifies the effectiveness of the defensive charge of the Ram line. The pass play that got the Eagles into our territory was an omen of things to come in the second half. As the first two quarters belonged to us, the third quarter belonged to the Eagles. Their execution at the start of the third period was nearly flawless. And as Coach Wallace was quoted as saying in the Winston-Salem Journal, “it looked as though we ran out of steam.” But were it not for two remarkable re ceptions by the Eagles split end Barry McNeil, and a costly fumble after their first touchdown on our own twenty- three yard line the score may have been drastically different. With what has to be considered still an impressive opening game the season looks very bright for our team. in Third Quarter Special recognition from this editor goes to Chico Dunlap and Raymond Cobb. Chico seems to be the most im proved offensive player on the team. And Raymond Cobb looks as though the year experience at linebacker may have de veloped him into the best linebacker on the team. Recognition of hustle goes to Curtis Richardson for doing the unheard of thing of playing both ways at offensive center and for the injured Alfred Harvey at linebacker in this game. These are early forecasts for our major sporting activity of the fall: Football: At this time taking a less than in depth glance at the “ ’73 ” edi tion of our “Big Red Machine’’. I pre dict a 7-1-1 season for the Rams. With a loss to N.C.C.U. already established to aid my prediction I can see only one other obstacle in the path of the Rams. By virtue of two opening upsets by Vir ginia Union over pre-season favorite Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State. I have to honestly and in all fairness to our team rate the game a toss-up thus indicating the tie game in my pre diction. Close games should come with always tough Elizabeth City State and, what will undoubtedly be the most in teresting and possibly most emotional games on our slate. When two sidekicks for years.
