NTCR TO LEARN. OEfART TO SERVE VOL. XI, NO. 2 WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY, WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA OCTOBER 26, 1973 Beauty Personified in Ramland Miss Winston-Salem State University Gloria Ann Horne Miss W SSV Homecoming Shirley Eugenia Wright She who carries the pride of WSSU wherever she goes is our Miss Winston- Salem State University, Miss Gloria Ann Horne, a senior business administration major. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mackey Robinson, she has four sisters and two brothers ranging in age from 1 to 10. Gloria, a native of Winston-Salem is an Aries, twenty-one years of age. Gloria came to WSSU mainly because of its convenience. For here, she is able to enjoy campus life while at the same time being close to home. Upon entering SU, she decided against teaching and thus embarked upon the business field. Since that time, Gloria has decided to become an accountant or to pursue a management position of some kind. Having attended Anderson High, Gloria was a member of the Spanish Club, Math Club, Honor Society and Future Home makers of America. Here at State, she is a member of Alpha Kappa Mu, Phi Beta Lambda and is a Reynolds scholar. WSSU was very impressive to our queen at first as she recalls her freshman and sophomore years as her best. For it was at this time that she was able to engage in many social activities. Hovv- ever, in advice to our new freshmen, Gloria smilingly, would tell them “to enjoy themselves but at the same time apply themselves in their classes.” Gloria would like to see WSSU make a step toward progress and have co-ed visitation. She feels that this would help the school to advance, at least to the point that other institutions have already. Highlighting the conversation, Gloria commented that her most memorable experience at WSSU was being chosen as this queen. Although she had no preconceived ideas of running, she accounts her doing so, through the influence and encourage ment of a few friends. Nevertheless she considers the title an honor and wishes to make every effort to serve WSSU, well. The queens will participate in the fol lowing events — Thursday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. Homecoming Coronation where the queens will be crowned in Whitaker’s Gymnasium, Friday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. — Red and White Day, Saturday, October 27 at 9:00 — the Annual Homecoming Parade and also the Homecoming Game at 1:30. Both queens join together in wishing Homecoming to be a Baaadd . . . one and ask the Rams’ co-operation in doing so. Who’s that lady? Now that you know, check them out!!. “Who’s that lady? . . . that beautiful lady? . . . that lovely lady? . . . that real fine lady? . . .” Our heart tells us to pursue . . . Who?! None other than our charming Miss Homecoming and Miss WSSU who have already begun their reign here at the university. These queens were chosen during the spring semester of last year to represent Winston-Salem State University. Shirley Eugenia Wright, Miss Home coming comes to us from Spartanburg, South Carolina. A junior nursing major, Shirley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Wright and has one sister and two brothers. Born June 20, Shirley is a Gemini, for all you astrology-minded! At Spartanburg High, Shirley was President of the Girl’s Athletic Associa tion and Secretary of the Wheeler’s Club. It was during her junior year, while en rolled in a nursing program that she developed a deep interest in the profes sion. Shirley’s mother, also a nurse has played an important part in her de cision. Having considered the Macon School of Nursing, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University along with Emery University, Shirley chose WSSU because of the reputation of its nursing school. After arriving at SU, Shirley was shocked at the size of the school. She also admits that she experienced some fright as a newcomer. Now however, Shirley likes the school and thinks that the people are extremely friendly. Here at State, she previously played intramural basketball and has been an attendant to Miss Bickett Hall and as Miss “Phi” on the Kappa Court. Present ly our queen is a member of the Student Nurses' Association and of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Con cerning pledging, Shirley feels that the experience has helped her to gain more friends and to realize the many needs of others. Her hobbies include sewing and sports. She also enjoys going places and hospital work. If WSSU could be improved, Shirley would improve the attitudes of the dining hall workers, include more sports activi ties for girls and above all — improve the food. POWER TO THE RAMS!
