At Homecoming and Always
Love, Service and Devotion
To Miss Homecoming 1974,
I/)ve, Service and Devotion for
WSSU is more than a mere
theme, it’s a personal
commitment. In the four years
Miss Delores McI.«od has been
here, she’s seen a lot of changes,
all, she feels for the betterment of
university Ufe. Despite all the
progress already made, Delores
feels there’s still room for
improvement. But without
student support, loyalty and
involvement, WSSU cannot go
forward.
It was the lack of student
involvement that prompted
Delores to enter the Miss
Homecoming competition last
spring. With the female
enrollment so high, Delores
viewed it pathetic that the women
of the university would allow a
queen contestant to be
unchallenged as was previously
the case.
It was not soley that she wished
to win, but more importantly,
that the voters had a choice at the
polls.
Delores Mcl^eod, the oldest of
seven children, lives with her
grandmother, Mrs. Willie
Cromartie, in Lumberton, N.C.
Majoring in Nursing, Delores
plans to go on to graduate school
and specialize in obstetrics.
As Miss Homecoming, Delores
shares the responsibility with
Miss WSSU of officially
representing WSSU at areas
universities’ homecomings. The
highlight of her reign came when

Miss WSSU Encourages Student Involvement
If there’s truth in the saying
“Ijfe is what you make it” then
things can only get better as the
year progresses for Miss WSSU.
Believing, strongly that things
don't just happen, you have to
make them happen - good or bad.
Miss Sondra Melvin has set some
high yet obtainable goals for
WSSU. She hopes to see the
enrollment here increased even
more through recruitment and
personal involvement along with
the acquisition of adequate
facilities.
Another area being tackled by
the reigning queen is the apathy
of students toward college life.
“We’ve got a good school,” says
Miss WSSU, ‘‘but we can make it
better.” But this can only happen
if every student becomes

she was crowned at the annual
Coronation Ball by Mr. Qarence
“Jeep” Jones, president of the
Winston-Salem State University
Alumni Association.
“It’s a good feeling,” explained
Delores, “to be Miss
Homecoming, but even a queen
has problems.” The major pet
peeve of the queen seemed to be
the hassle involved in obtaining
transportation to various schools
when on official business. To
remedy this situation, Delores
suggest that the school should
include allotments for
transportation, lodging, etc. of its
queens in the annual budget. If
this is done and enough advance
planning is implemented then,
Delores feels, future Miss
Homecomings and Miss WSSUs
will be better able to represent
WSSU.
Miss Homecoming feels
strongly that this year’s
homecoming should prove to be
one of the best yet. Even though
this will be our first attempt at
having shows in the coliseum,
Delores believes the people are
going to have a good time
wherever they are.
Miss McLeod would like to see
more alumni included in
homecoming activities so that
they will have more to “come
home to,” The Alumni
Association is still an integral
part of the WSSU family (though
the majority of the students
aren’t aware of this) and should
be treated thusly.
Things have improved over the
years for the queens. So if you’ve
got the interest, the time and the
talent, Delores urges all women
of the university to get involved.
It’s both a worthwhile and an
enjoyable experience.

Sondra Giselle Melvin began
her reign as Miss WSSU this fall.
She's the oldest and only
(laughter of the six children of
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Melvin of
Goldsboro, N.C. Her leadership
ability has gained her the office
of president of the Omega
chaptei- of Zeta Phi Beta
Sorority, Incorporated and the
Student Nurses' Association.
A senior Nursing major,
Sondni will seek a master’s
degree and specialize in the field
of obstetrics. Those who know
Sondra generally agree that she’s
a dedicated, hard worker with a
gift of making those around her
feel it’s good to be alive!
ITliring her reign, Sondra will
serve as a member of the
Recruitment Committee, as
official hostess for WSSU and as
official representative of the
university. Although it’s a great
responsibility. Miss WSSU
readily adds that she loves it. She
feels it an honor to greet and
entertain visitors, guest speakers
and other dignitaries visiting our
university. But then, thanks to
Sondra’s gift of gab , she’s never
been at a loss for words and no
one is a stranger.
As the homecoming season is
upon us, Sondra wishes to insure
all that Homecoming ’74 will
certainly be “doing it up” in all
aspects. There’s been an awful
lot of hard work put into it’s
planning and execution so if you
want to have a good time, it’s
definitely here.
.Sondra Molvin - Miss WSSl 1974
Miss WSSU extends to alumni
and friends a very special
welcome and thanks for their
continuous support not only at
homecomings but throughout the
year. To fellow Rams, old and
new, near and far, Miss WSSU
says, “Support the Rams,
support the university and
equally, support our Alumni
Association.”
