Present Personnel: With 35 returning lettermen, 29 blue chip recruits and a revitalized coaching staff, Coach Cleo Wallace is looking forward to improving the Ram’s 4-7 record of 1974. Wallace is especially jubilant over the fact that his returnees include All-CIAA linebacker Curtis Richardson, 6- 4, 240-pound offensive tackle Carson Ewings and running backs Gary Scales and Marvin Morrison. Morrison, who was the Conference’s leading ground gainer two years ago and who was runner-up for that honor the year before, returns to the Rams after a year of inactivity. “A number of our recruits,” Wallace said, “should be able to make an immediate contribution to the team.” Losses: In assessing his losses Wallace said: “The Rams will definitely miss All-American and four-time All-CIAA lineman Bennie Barbour, Quarterback Londell McClary, Center Curtis Phifer, Running backs Chico Dunlap and Raymond Cobb, Defensive back Charlton Houston, and Jeryl Todd,Flanker George Macklin, Fullback John Connaly and Tackle Nathaniel Goodson,” but Wallace added, “We feel that with the present personnel we have, we will be able to ‘put it together.’ ” Coaching Staff: The Coaching Staff has been revitalized by the addition of Otis Hawkins, James (Jim) Price and Londell McClary. Hawkins starred as a defensive end at A & T State University and has had coaching experience at Reynolds High School and at Fayetteville State. Price joins the Staff after two seasons at defensive end with the San Diego Chargers. He played his collegiate football at North Carolina Central. McClary has been the Ram starting quarterback for the past three years. These men join Wallace and Albert Roseboro, a tormer Ram lineman who is beginning his second year as a member of the coaching staff. Recruiting Strategy: Our strategy was directed toward finding recruits who were ready- to-play. “In addition to looking for skills,” Wallace said, “We were also looking for men with size also.” Backfield Recruits: Two quarterbacks were recruited in an attempt to find a replacement for McClary. They are Alvin RAM PROSPECTUS WINSTON-SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY 1975 Football Schedule Date School Site Time September 13 Hampton Hampton 2:00 p.m September 20 N.C. Miles at 5- 11 has a good arm but Crudup seems to have more promise. The two will join Bernard Smith, Fraco Goode and Curtis Martin who have had at least one year of seasoning. The running game should be strengthened and revitalized by the addition of Ricky Qark of Enfield, Andre Douglas of Charlotte and Willie Coley of Goldsboro. Coley, who gained 1479 yards and scored 17 touchdowns last year, may prove to be the Rams’ most exciting runner. Lineman Recruits: Wallace also recruited eight line men who should give the team some immediate help. In that group are 6-4, 220-pound lineman Reginald Craig from Winston- Salem’s North Forsyth, Leslie Royal, 255 offensive guard from Mt. Olive, N.C. and 6-4, 279-pound defensive tackle Terry Jackson of Marion. Wallace is hoping that Craig will be able to fill Barbour’s spot. Other outstanding linemen are Willie Jorden, a 6-6, 240-pound defensive tackle from Riverview, Fla.; Roy Barksdale, a 6-0, 235- pound middle guard from Philadelphia; Baxter Harrington, a 6-1, 190-pound linebacker from Goldsboro who played in the Shrine Bowl; Robert Young, a 6-0, 205-pound lineman from West Forsyth; James Gilliam, a 5-11, 185-pound middle guard from Woodruff, S.C.; and Charlie Whitaker, a 6-0, 255-pound guard from Enfield. Prediction: The Rams will be a winner in 1975 and an exciting team to watch. 1975 Winston-Salem State University Football Roster No. Name, •'.Jr. 40 41 42 43 44 51 52 53 54 10 - Smith, Walter’ B. 12 - Goode, Willic^m 13 - Sherard, Reginald 14 ■ Miles, Alvin 20 - Kimborough, Lee 22 - Harrison, Jatpes 23 - Jackson, Marvin 24 - Coley, Willie 25 - Clark, Ricky 26 - Rhone, Kenneth 27 - Scales, Gary 30 - Robinson, Charles 31 - Scott, Rhann 33 ■ Crudup, Michael 34 - Douglas, Andre 35 - Herron, George 36 - Jones, Curtis 37 ■ Hill, Ervin 38 - AAorrison, Marvin 39 - Glenn, Kenreth Harlee, Stephen Carouthers, Steve Gordon, George Washington, Cornelius Montague, Dexter 46 ■ Bethea, Barry 50 - Stringfield, Robert Evans, Coleman Harrington, Baxter Oats, Anthony Richardson, Curtis 57 - Moore, Robert 58 ■ Weeks, Robert 59 - Gilliam, James 60 - Whitaker, Charlie 62 - Young, Marvin 63 - Powell, William 64 - Caldwell, Broderick 65 - Barksdale, Ray 66 • Cox, Clarence 67 - Edwards, Henry 70 - Stanfield, Wilfred 71 - Raiford, Gary 72 - Jackson, Terry 73 - Jordon, Willie 74 - Craig, Reginald 75 - Royal, Leslie 76 - Smith, Walter D. 77 - Ewing, Carson 78 - Winbush, James 79 - Nobel, Anderson 80 - Rogers, Johnny 81 - Gist, John 82 - Mason, Arthur 83 - Rushing, Curtis 84 - Scales, Lonnie 85 - Finch, Dwayne 87 - Kennedy, Alvin 88 - Murrell, William 89 - Warren, Alfred Baldwin, Paul Gilchrist, Anthony Young, Robert Young, Ronald Pos.
