Page 6 - The News Argus - December, 1976 Concert Review Madrigals at Reynolda House The Winston-Salem State Madrigal Singers made their first appearance of the school year Tuesday, November 9 al Reynolda House. Reynolda House is Winston-Salem’s largest mansion and was formally owned by Tobacco Industry millionaire R.J. Reynolds. It was later doanted to Wake Forest University by the Reynolds fantily. The Madrigals dkccted by Dr. Lee M. Beall consists of eight soprano’s and alto’s four tenor’s, and six bass singers. The evening began with a wonderful rendition of “Am erica” which was masterfully arranged", directed, and ac companied by Dr. Beall. The group slipped right into the next selection “America The Beautiful.” The group reached a peak in the performance with a spiritually touching version of “I Have A Dream” and thoroughly captured the attention of the audience. At this point one had to be thoroughly impressed with this group of singers. As the group prepared to sing “Now Spring In All Her Glory,” Dr. Beall explained that Madri? gals are ail about spring, happiness, and love. Cassandra Scales one of the group’s soprano’s did the only solo number entitled, “Mov- Starscope by Brenda Carter Sagittarius [Nov. 23-Dec. 20] People born under this sign are often honest and forth right. They are broadminded, irresponsible, self-centered, and reckless. The Sagittarian enjoys sports and games, and it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. He is a forgiving person, and never sulks over something that has not worked out in his favor. The Sagittarius strong point is resilience and momentum gained through hope. They are turned on by Aries and Leo. Some Sagittarians are restless. They take foolish risks and seldom leam from the mistakes they make. They do not know how to handle money and they are often mismanaging their finances. Sagittarius planetary ruler is Jupiter, the symbol of enthusiasm. -ing On”. The group also sang “Feelings” which Dr. Beall considers one of their most popular numbers. The last selection was the “Little Old Lady in Tennis Shoes” and it put the group into a finger popping mood. Then Dr. Beall cut into a tune similar to a jitterbug on the piano and with that the performance was concluded. As I talked with Dr. Beall, he expressed the need for music students at WSSU to get experience in music literature and this is the basic purpose for formulating such a group. He was quite excited about the free use of Reynolda House and a little upset that more students or faculty & staff did not attend. If you have the opportunity to see the Madrigal Singers perform please don’t miss it. Running from the Devil - Part II The Devil Has A Plan I started out with patience But as I stalled for time, That two-faced dirty Her Tried to make me change my mind As I was getting ready, The Devil spoke to me. He laughed and said with terror, “I’ll get you wait and see!” The night was dark and gloomy. It seemed I could not sleep, I started to hear noises Or voices from the deep. The devil with his slyness Tried to make me feel remorse But as I cried out “JESUS” The Devil’s voice grew hoarse! I could not find my Bible, But Jesus shined his light. I smiled and said with courage. collegiate camouflage M S U I S S A C S A C L E 0 S A A G 0 W E K C 0 L Y H S H E C L L 0 R E P S 0 R P A R E L N A R C A R H E E L Z M 0 L C A I T R 0 P A W T T L L P E I I N D T A L 0 N N R U E H N R B R E C N G M A 0 J U T H A E 0 U S U T U R 8 A M E C E T P S P D Q 0 C L I A 8 E L H J 0 0 L H 0 N 0 V L C N G D U I S D A S E Y I U A B N Q L S I 0 E C S M L Q M C I A I U R E N I 0 R 0 Q I U K C E N A 0 A D R A B R U T A R T A P 0 E L C A E C N E R U A L R A I R F Y Find the hidden Shakespearean charactors. And then T shouted “Satan, I’ll win and this you know!” With shouts and cries and stomps The Devil could not see. For even while I faced the dark, I still had victory! The Plan that Satan tried to use Backfired in his face. And now he’s even more afraid Of when we run the race. The Devil moaned in agony He cried with sure nough pain “You think you’ll beat me running But I’ll make you ashamed! And then I told the Devil “Return to yonder deep. And practice for the race to come Now go, and let me sleep!” It seems his plan backfired Now Satan’s Fighting Mad, But one thing he’s forgotten. My GOD is SUPER-BAD! -Beverly Blackwell Part III.
