Page 8 - llie News Argus - Deceaiber, 1976 1976-77 Basketball Season Begins Prospectus Rams Basketball Roster The Rams hope to improve last year’s record 24-6 and are looking to the 1976-77 season with optimism. They will play a rugged 25 game schedule which includes 16 CIA A, 6 MEAC and 3 major indepen dents. Four starters return with All CIAA selectees, Carlos Terry, 6’5” and 6’1” Don Helton leading the pack. Mike Brown, 6’6” and Stenson Conley 6’5”. Top reserves, Pete Martin, George Gibson, David Harold and Marco Dillard round out the veteran squad. Gone but not forgotten are All CIAA and NAIA guard Tom Paulin and Melvin Garrett, last year’s zone busters. Top recruits are Reginald Gaines, Wilmington, N.C., 6’7”, Greg Garner, 6’7”, Washington, D.C., Charles Jone, Columbus, Ohio, 6’8”, Ray Jones, Levittown, Pa., 6’7”, Guards: Larry Rucker, 6’0”, Gene Harris were players of the year in Winston-Salem and Charlotte. The Rams are off to a good start winning 89-65 in a non-conference opener a- gainst Allen University on Saturday, November 27. The first game of confe rence play was against the Bears of Shaw University on Saturday, December 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum. Final score- Rams win 106-67 - RlNAME Football Season Ends Rams Down Shaw Raleigh - The Winston- Salem State Rams, under first year Head Coach Bill Hayes, ended the current football season by downing the Shaw University Bears 29-18. Hayes’ chargers thus finished the season with a 4-4 conference record and 4-6 overall. The game, a part of the Shaw Homecoming Celebra tion, was played yesterday afternoon at the Raleigh-Enloe High School athletic field in cold and windy weather. The Bears will end their season next Saturday. Both teams started slow due to the extremely cold weather and neither scored in the first and third periods. However, both scored in the second and fourth periods. The Rams got good field position on the Shaw 21 during the first three minutes of play when they partially blocked a Shaw punt. The Rams could not move the ball and a 24 foot field goal attempt also failed. The Bears failed on two scoring opportunities in the first period. At the 5:54 mark Lee Davis fumbled and a Shaw defender recovered it on the Ram 30. After a pass from Cecil Alexander to Bo Darken putting the Bears on the Ram two was nullified by an illegal procedure penalty, the Bears were forced to give up the Ball on the Ram 20. The second opportunity occurred as the first period ended when Lionel Jackson took an Antonia Howard punt on his 40 and went all the way into the Ram endzone. This effort was nullified by a clipping penalty. The Rams finally scored the game’s first touchdown with three and a half minutes left in the second period when Randy Bolton scored on a 13 yard run. The drive was started on the Ram 24. It included a 15-yard pass to Johnny Rodgers, a 2-yard pass to Bolton, a pitch-out fumble to Rodgers fielded by Bolton and runs by Davis and Boltn. Alvin Miles split the uprights with his kick and the Rams went out front 7-0. On their possession follow ing the Ram touchdown, the Bears scored with just a little over a minute left in the first half. The score came when an Alexander pass was snatched by Bo Darden as a Ram defender batted it into the air. The kick was wide and the Rams’ lead was cut to 7-6. The Rams extended their first half lead following the Bear score when Reginald Sherard took a Bear kickoff on his 14 and took it 86 yards for the Ram second touchdown for the game. Won 575 Lost 242 46 seconds left in the half. The Bears were unable to score during their possession and the Rams carried a 13-6 lead to the dressing room at halftime. Neither team was able to mount a sustained drive during the third period. On the last play of the period Cornelius Washington inter cepted an Alexander pass on the Ram 46 and returned it tc the Bear 36. Seven plays later and at the 12:53 mark of the fourth period, Bolton scored his second touchdown of the game for the Rams. On the conversion play, Clarence Cox recovered an Alvin Miles fumble in the endzone and the Rams’ lead was extended to 21-6. On their next possession, a fired up Bear team marched 56 yards in eleven plays for their second touchdown of the afternoon. They were given good field position when Lionel Jackson took the Ram kickoff on his five and returned it to his 44. The ball was moved through the air and with the aid of two personal foul penalties to the Ram one foot line where Alexander went over on a keeper on fourth down. The two point conversion attempt failed and the Ram lead was cut to 21-12. Following the Bear score. the next Ram drive was stopped at the Ram 36. Howard punted and it rolled dead at the Bear four. On the first play of the series, Alexander was trapped in his endzone by Elbert Grinnell and Curtis Sherrod and the i\ams extended their lead to 23-12 at the 2:51 mark of the fourth period. The Rams received the kickoff following the safety on the 30 and returned it to the 44. With reserve quarterback John Turner in command, they moved the ball to the four on runs by George Miles, Willie Coley and a 36-yard pass to Rodgers. In two tries Steve Carouthers scored on a 2-yard run. The kick failed and the Rams extended their lead to 29-12 with only 56 seconds left in the game. In the remaining seconds the Bears got off four plays and scored their final touchdown of the game on a fourth and ten, play which was completed after the clock had run out. The final play was a 50 yard pass play from Alexander to Bobby Landers. A two-point conversion at tempt failed and the Rams ended their season with a 29-18 conference win over their arch rival, the Shaw University Bears. "C.B.
