The News Argus - May, 1977 - Page 3 Gil ScoU-Herron Performs At WSSU Noted lecturer and musi cian, Gil Scott-Herron gave a dyneimic performance in the Kenneth R. Williams Audi torium on April 18, 1977. The program was sponsored by the Student Government Association. Herron played to a full house of students, instruc tors, and other interested persons. In the last two months he and his cham pion, the Doctor, have performed at numerous Black college campuses. Herron began his lecture by telling the audience about an African custom where one man in a tribe learned the entire history of his tribe. The man who committed his tribe’s history to memory was called a “giant”. Next Herron urged Blacks not to become complacent, but to remain abreast of the things happening to other Blacks. He told of another African custom where the traveling poet was accompanied by a percussionist. In keeping with that custom, Herron travels with an associate called the Doctor. The Doctor is an outstanding percussionist who builds his own instruments and teaches others how to play them. The Doctor displayed and de monstrated many of his instruments. The instru ments shown included rat tles used to drive away evil spirits, bells used to bring good spirits, a hand bone, an aerial phone, and an assortment of drums. The audience really enjoyed the Doctor’s performance, espe cially when he invited them to help him sing a boating song called “Alien Bo’’. While singing, the Doctor played an instrument called the “Shake-a-Ray” so vigorously that shouts of approval came bursting forth from the audience. After the Doctor’s performance, Gil Scott-Herron began to lec ture again. Herron said that man is a creature that has three dimensions. First there is the dimension of rhythm, next is the dimension of the mind and finally there is the dimension of the spirit. Men should seek three dimen sional experiences which consist of the transfer of information. Next Herron talked about the Black man’s demand for relevant poetry. This type of poetry is needed for information and communi cation. He did a poem called “Billy Green is Dead’’ that the audience really enjoyed. He recounted many of the laws passed that have put Blacks at a disadvantage. The law Herron placed particular emphasis on was enforced mainly on Blacks. Herron talked about the many things that he sees wrong with America. One thing that he was aware of was the strange discrepan cies in our calendar and alphabet. He has coined a word that he uses when he can’t understand the incon- sistances of the world. 'The word is “Dot Dot Did It, Dot See SCOTT, page 6 Gil Scott-Herron Professor Completes Book Eddie D.
