Smith University 57-18. Homecoming ‘SU Romps J.C. Coach Clarence “Big- house” Gaines, known as the undisputed legend, was ho nored October 17 at the Ben ton Convention Center. Ac companied by his wife Clara of 29 years, the night belonged to “Bighouse.” Several people attended the celebrated affair. In the lobby of the Convention Center, there was a showcase of awards and newspaper artic les highlighting the success and achievements of Coach Gaines throughout his 34 years at Winston-Salem State. The roast began with a dinner and afterwards Billy Packer, Master of Ceremony, introduced the platform roast ers. John Russell, CIAA referee; Bill Miller former Elon College coach; Cal Irvin, A&T State University coach; Bones McKinney, former Wake Forest basketball coach; and Benjamin Ruffin, special assistant to Governor James Hunt. The other roasters were Mary Barber, George Foree, Gene Overby, Mary Penn, John McLendon, Charlie Har- ville, Kenneth R. Williams, past Chancellor of Winston- Salem State University; and Wayne A. Corpening, Mayor of the city of Winston-Salem. The roasters sought to bring back the past as they remi nisced precious memories and spoke jokingly about the man they love arid respect. At the conclusion of the roast, Billy Packer introduced Coach Gaines, who was given a standing ovation. Coach Gaines individually thanked the roasters and acknowledg ed special praise to the atten dants and the Multiple Sclero sis Society to which proceeds from the roast went. By Everett Jaclcson Sports Editor It was Homecoming Day at Winston-Salem State Univer sity (WSSU) and a crowd of 16,000 people gathered at Bowman-Gray Stadium to wit ness the football contest be tween the WSSU Rams and the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. On the second play of the game, Timmy Newsome burst Smith the line and ran 85 yards for the game’s first score. The Rams scored continu ously in the second half, The Ram offensive players seemed to be taking turns scoring by compiling a mas sive 613 yards of total offense insluding 209 yards rushing by All-American Timmy New- some. Newsome and Arrington Jones scored in the fourth quarter, but the play that left Johnson C. Smith completely stunned was a pass play from Allen Ward to Ronnie Johnson that went 93 yards (LONGEST in CIAA this season). John son, who runs track, dazzled a tackle and ran untouched for another Ram touchdown. The Ram defense shutout the Bulls in the second half as Winfred Mack led the way with furious tackles and key interceptions. Coach Hayes was able to send in his second unit and Karlton Watson add ed fuse to the fire with a touchdown throw to Tony Nimmons. The game concluded with the Rams scoring 40 second half points, limiting Johnson C. Smith to a total of 7 yards rushing and making the final score 57-18. When asked what brought upon the explosive charge. What are the most points that Winston-Salem State has scored in a football game and what has l>een the most points scored against the Rams? A. In 1978, the Rams scored 72 points against the Shaw University Bears. The Rams have scored 62 points twice. This occured in 1959 against St. Paul and in 1960 against Fayetteville. In 1969, North Carolina Central scored 63 points against the Rams and duplicated that score in 1970. Q. Prior to Virginia Union’s 13-0 victory over Winston-Sal- em, when was the last time the Rams were shotoat in regular season play? A. In 1975, the Rams compiled a 1-9 record. They were shutout five times including a 32-0 loss to Virginia Union. Q. In regular season play, why doesn’t a game advance into extra quarters if there is a tie? A. This has been a tradition in college football, but the way rules are changing, don’t be surprised if the tie becomes a thing of the past. Q. I am a very big fan of Earl CampbeU, will you tell me somthing aliout liis childhood? A. Earl was one of eleven children of Mr. & Mrs. B.C. Campbell of Tyler, Texas. Football was an on-again, off-again for Earl because he continuously missed high school practice. But look at him,now! Q. What is the latest word on former Dallas Cowboy star Duane Thomas? A. During his strive for a comeback, Duane was cut by the Green Bay Packers during the ’79 Training Camp. Duane is currently in the restaurant business in Dallas, Texas and hopes to play football again. Sports-in-Brief By Everett Jackson Sports Editor Football-Seniors Timmy Newsome and Winfred Mack were awarded the Schlltz offensive and defensive players of the game against Johnson C. Smith. Prior to the Ram-Elizabeth City game, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Stands 6-1-1 in the CIAA conference and 6-2-1 overall. The team is seeking a bid to the CIAA playoffs. During the Rams 47-7 romp over Livingstone, Arrington Jones, for the second time, was honored CIAA Player of the Week. For his ,3 touchdowns and 209 yards rushing, Timmy Newsome was named National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) Player of the Week, during the Rams 57-18 victory over J.C. Smith. Wake Forest advanced from 18th to 14th in the Associated Press (AP) and United Press Incorporated (UPI) poll. A win at Clemson could assure Wake a bowl bid and a possible Alantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship., Basketball- The premier of the 1979-80 men’s basketball season begins November 30th at the Ward Invitation in Oliio. The women’s basketball season begins at home November 20th. They will be competing against Wake Forest University. Wrestling- Ricl(y Hargrove and Horace Williams are expected to qualify for the NAIA Nationals as the 25 man roster start the season November 3rd, competing in a tournament at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.
