May 18. Her duties as chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus truly make her a woman on the move. By Kathy Wiley The 1980 Commencement Exercises will be held on May 18, in the Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum. The guest speaker will be Con gresswoman Cardiss Collins. Congresswoman Collins was born in St. Louis, Missouri, moved to Detroit at the age of ten, and later moved to Chicago. She is a graduate of Detroit High School of Commerce and Northwestern University. She is also a member of First Baptist Church of Chicago. Congresswoman Collins has a comprehensive list of ac- complisments. She is Chair woman of the Congressional Black Caucus and a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Col ored People, Chicago Urban League, National Council of Negro Women, National Women’s Political Caucus, and a honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Playing an instrumental role in her late husband, George’s political success, undoubtedly paved the way for her own career. She is Commit- teewoman of Chicago’s 24th Ward Regular Democratic Organization. The Con gresswoman was elected in 1973 to fill the position of U.S. House of Representatives for the Seventh Congressional District of Illinois left vacant by the death of her husband. Since then. Congresswoman Collins’ political involvement has impressivley grown. She is the first woman and first black to chair the House Govern ment Operations Subcommit tee on Manpower and Hous ing, which has responsibility for the Department of Labor, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Ac- See Page 2 Future Leaders WSSU students recently elected their peers to lead them for the 1980-81 academic school year.
