The News Argus, February, 1981, Page 3 A New Director Photo by Millard James Mrs Sandra Sosrtik is the university's director of cooperative education. The purpose of the program is to provide students with practical experience in fields that they study. By Michael Hampton Students may now receive on-the-job training while attending college. This is made possible through the university’s cooperative education program (co-op) which is headed by Mrs. Sandra Sosnik. The program combines on-the- job training with college academic study and is open to all students. “Local and out of town businesses strongly endorse cooperative educa tion,” says Mrs. Sosnik, “we’re very excited about the program.” Students are exposed to different settings in a particular occupation and get the feel of what it’s really like outside of the classroom. The university program is federally funded and is set up under two plans: the alternating plan, which allows students to work full time one semester and attend class the next semester. The other is called the parallel plan, in which students work part-time and at tend classes part lime. Students in the cooperative educa tion program receive college credit and are paid while they train. Several hun dred applications have been picked up by students but as of yet have not been returned, said Mrs. Sosnik. Companies that participate in the co op program often employ the students they train, “Not only do the students gain valuable experience but gel their foot in the door” says Mrs. Sosnik who has recently started her first semester here at Winston-Salem State. She had previously been employed with ihc Winston-Salem Urban League. Mrs. Sosnik also stressed the point ihat students should not until ihcir senior year to get involved but should start as early as their freshman year. Although there are no prere quisites to enter the program, grade point averages are important when be ing considered for permanent employ ment by a company. All interested students should go to Mrs. Sosnik’s of fice located in Coltrane Hall room 115. Organization Notes The Winston-Salem State University Rho Chi Chapter of the history honorary society.
