Wallace, 52, was assistant professor of physical education, women’s basketball head coach and assistant athletic director at WSSU. He will long be remembered for his skills as an excellent coach and teacher, for his warm sense of humor and ultimately, for his respect toward mankind. Wallace was born April 24, 1928, in Madison County, Georgia. He eventu ally became a resident of Newark, New Jersey, where he enrolled in the Essex County High Schools. While in high school, Wallace excelled in athletics. He lettered in football, basketball and football, and in 1947, Wallace was signed to a grant-in-aid by Clarence Gaines, athletic director at WSSU. “He was a man of remarkable courage and was a great influence upon everyone he met,” stated Gaines, an associate of Wallace for 30 memorable years. “He was the ideal friend and a great person to work with. He got the job done.” Following his graduation from WSSU, Wallace enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and continued to excel in athletics. While in the Air Force, Wallace was named to the All Air Force Football Team. In 1952, Wallace became a member of the Cleveland Browns Professional Football Team. Although his stay was brief, Wallace had seen his childhood dream blossom into reality. Wallace returned to his alma mater in 1966 as line coach and became the fourth head coach of the Rams football team in 1970. Wallace guided the Rams to their first CIAA Divisional Championship in 1971 and was also chosen CIAA Coach of the Year (1971). Wallace was dedicated to athletics and to humanity. Cheryl Burke, a member of the Rammettes basketball team, who was coached by Wallace for two years, recalls her experiences with “Tiny.” “He was a great coach. He helped me with my academic, as well as athletic goals. He was a great person. I’m going to miss him.” Chancellor Covington referred to Wallace as being an outstanding person and a highly respected friend and colleague. A member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Wallace leaves to mourn, his wife, Gwendolyn; one son, Kevin Girard; and a host of relatives, friends and admirers. Sports-In-Brief By Everett Jackson Tennis - The tennis team, spearheaded by the dynamic duo of sophomore Kevin Crawford and freshman Tyrone Brooks, are off to a grand start. The netters, under the direction of Coach A1 Roseboro, are 8-4 and are battling for the Southern Division Championship. The Southern Division Tournament will be held April 24-25 at Hanes Park in Winston-Salem. The Rams, along with conference rival St. Augustine’s are expected to do well in the 2-day event. The CIAA Championship, the grand finale of tennis, will be played May 1-2 on the campus of Elizabeth City State University. Representatives from both the Southern and Northern divisions will be competing. « 4^ # Golf - Another season of golf is ready to “tee-off.” Golf, coached by A1 Roseboro, is virtually an unsung sport that can rise above the deck with stu dent support and can become “a-hole-in-one.” ¥ * » Wrestling - Mike Edwards, the coach who silently but effectively restored wrestling at WSSU, was named NAIA Coach of the Year. Edwards, who coached the team to two CIAA Championships states, “We’ve only just begun.” ¥ « ¥ Track - Head Coach Virgil Simpson is seeking to restore track at WSSU. Once a powerhouse in the mid-60’s and early 70’s, the team has had its share of problems, ultimately in recruiting. However, behind the talents of Jack Cameron, Ron Johnson, Stanley King and Greg Nunn, Simpson hopes to solve the problems and gain success. Thus far, the Rams have been impressive and have shown vast signs of improvement. The women’s track team, led by the multi-explosive trio of Vanessa Smith, Candace Hamilton and Bonita Reed, are racing toward a suc cessful season. Simpson praises the team and feels it will be very competitive in the always tough CIAA Conference. ¥ ¥ « Softball - The women’s softball team is pitching their way to a winning and exciting season. With an 8-2 record. Coach Willie Yellock feels the combination of youth and experience is the key to the team’s drastic tur naround. Terry McPherson and Betty Drake are among the key performers who spark the Rammettes. ♦ ¥ ♦ INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL-For the second consecutive year.
