Page 4, The News Argus, April, 1981 Editorials Financial Aid Cuts In the February/March issue of the Black Collegian magazine, Tony Brown wrote an article entitled, “The Reagan Position on black colleges.” In this article. Brown quoted President Reagan as saying, “The plight of our black colleges reminds us all of the unfinished work of bringing all disadvantaged groups into the mainstream of America. These colleges exemplify the truly American concept of self-help for those who choose to work and study in them. This is the message of Black College Day. 1 support it, 1 applaud it, and if I am elected President, I won’t forget it.” In addition to the President’s quote, Brown also stated in the article that Edwin Meese III, Reagan’s chief White House ad visor backed Reagan in the promise to provide financial support for black col leges. Obviously, these were merely false campaign promises. Not only did Reagan forget black colleges, but also all colleges supported by federal student aid. The Basic Grant Program and the National Director Student Loan programs will pro bably be cut tremendously, due to a proposal by the President to cut back funds for student financial aid. Due to this cut, many high school students may never achieve a higher level of education. Many students who already attend college can “kiss their education good-bye.” Without sufficient aid, many black schools will be phased out. With 85% of our student body receiving financial aid benefits, WSSU would be one of the colleges forced to close. Maybe what Mr. Reagan meant by bringing us “into the mainstream of America” is that he prefers to keep black colleges back 50 year and keep the work of them “Unfinished.” He also mentions something about “self help.” Well it’s obvious that without federal aid, many low income or no income students will have no means for “self help”...And will always remain “disadvantaged.” Recruitment DATE ORGANIZATION MAJORS POSITIONS April 6 Greenville County School, Greenville, S.C. Normally we see our own true reflections. However, there is one black individual whose mirror must be broken. Instead of his own black reflection, he sees that of a white man. A recent article in the Winston- Salem Journal featured the UNC desegregation situation and a certain Mr. Thomas Sowell of the Hoover In stitute, a typical “Uncle Tom.” This “yes man” for the UNC system was hunted down and paid $2,000 a day to cut down his own race. He has a plan concerning desegregation that would put blacks back another hundred years. The first step in his remedy is to fire all present faculty and ad ministrators of black colleges and universities. He also feels that there is “no need to create problems by admitting poorly prepared students to highly com petitive schools when more than 3,000 colleges and universities in this country provide enough institutions for every level of preparedness.” In other words, there are colleges for all of us dumb black students. All of us should enroll in one of those because we will be “bet ter off in schools already teaching at our level of preparation.” So for all of us already attending black colleges, I assume we are on the right track. Many black students who get in over their heads academically in predominately white schools come to have the opinion of themselves that they are second class citizens.” He goes on to say that “that situation helps ex plain the tendency of many blacks to continue to associate with blacks after they enroll in integrated schools.” Therefore, all blacks who attend in tegrated schools can no longer associate with other blacks, not even family members. We all must learn to adjust to being white like Mr. Sowell has. I wonder how any man could utter words that would prove him a traitor to his own race. Maybe he has been brainwashed by the money UNC has dropped in his lap. He just might really believe himself to be white. Maybe we should all pitch in and buy him a new mirror. By the way, Mr. Sowell, who is a native of Gastonia, North Carolina, was termed by Newsweek Magazine as President Reagan’s “favorite black intellectual.” Reagan also offered him the position, secretary of education. But there aren't any bio logical reasons for it. The reasons are in difPer- ences between their jobs, their education and their health care. Many black Americans don't get the benefits of the latest advances in diagnosis and treat ment and don't recognize cancers early warning signals. Better education about cancer is one of the jobs we tackle at the American Cancer Society, in addition to research and services to patients. But all of this takes money Your money. Give what you can to give black Americans a better chance against cancer. _ SHARE THE COST OF LIVING. GIVE TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.
