^ht Vol. XVI No. 3 Winston-Salem State University November, 1981 Will Enhance Education Proeram WSSU May Acquire Anderson The finance committee of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved 1981-82 budget allocations that included over $600,000 for Winston-Salem State to buy Ander son High School from the Winston- Salem Forsyth County School System. The proposed purchase of Anderson High School will permit WSSU to ex pand its current classroom facilities. The estimated total cost of purchasing Anderson has been reported at $1.5 million and renovations at an estimated $1.9 million. The acquisition of Anderson will allow the university to expand teacher education programs which are in jeopardy at WSSU. “The education program may not be able to maintain accreditation unless additional facilities are acquired,” voiced several university officials. William F. Sheppard, Acting Ex ecutive Director of Development at WSSU, and city-county school board member, noted that getting funds for the purchase of Anderson has been both complicated and tedious because of the variables surrounding the actual purchase. He noted that certain factors such as the actual date of sale, and plans to reorganize the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools will delay WSSU’s proposed plan to buy and renovate Anderson. Dr. Melvin Gadson, Director of Division of Education, in a written statement, commented on the impact of the acquisition of Anderson to the teacher education program. “The acquisition of Anderson High School, which is scheduled to become the major facility for the School of Education at Winston- Salem State University, will signifi cantly enhance the Teacher Education Program. The present facility, Coltrane Hall, is absolutely too small and inadequately equipped to get the best out of our faculty members and students who work and matriculate here. While all of our programs are State and nationally approved, this enlarged facility will enable us to continue to improve the offerings in these areas as well as provide for a more comprehensive curricula, especially as we look forward to m A Festive Event a localized Enrichment Center, a localized Curriculum Materials Center, laboratories for teaching methods courses in science and mathematics in addition to other basic facilities that are germane to curricula offerings by modern universities. The statement further said that, Anderson High School will provide the necessary space for modern educational experimental labora tories for conducting high-risk research, observation classrooms, graduate programs.” A Generous Donation A U'SSU student calmly donates blood at the Kappa Alpha Psi campus spon sored Red Cross blood-drive.
