University Honors Students/Parents

Parents of WSSU students will
witness about 200 students receive
honors for academic achievements
during the university’s annual Parents’
Day/Honors Day program which will
be held Sunday, April 18. Keynote
speaker for this event will be Dr. Asa
Spaulding, vice president for
administration at Durham Life Broad
casting and member of the UNC Board
of Governors.
Students who will be recognized at the
Honors Day program have been enroll
ed as full-time students at WSSU dur
ing the fall semester, and have a
minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point
average. Students receiving departmen
tal and major honors have exited
general studies, and have been for
mally admitted to their major depart
ment. They have been enrolled at
WSSU as full-time students at least two
consecutive semesters, and have earned
a minimum of 60 sememster hours in
university work. Honorees have earned
at least 18 semester hours of courses re
quired in their major, with courses
calculated in this grade point average
yielding at least a 3-0 with no grade
below a “C.” These students have
been approved by the chairperson and
members of their department. There
will be only one honoree per major—the
student with the highest average in his
major.
With the exception of freshmen, all
class honorees have been enrolled at
WSSU as full-time students at least two
consecutive semesters. Freshmen have
been enrolled at the university during
the fall semester and have earned 12-29
semester hours. The three freshmen,
five sophomores, seven juniors and
nine seniors with the highest
cumulative averages in their classes will
be recognized. Sophomores have earn
ed between 30-59 hours, juniors 60-89
hours and seniors have earned a
minimum of 90 hours.
There will be a presentation made for
the excellence in teaching award. All
other honorees will receive appropriate
awards.
Parents of honor students will receive
special invitations with seating cards,
and will sit in the guest section behind
their sons and daughters. Dr.
Haywood Wilson, vice chancellor for
student affairs, said the program will
begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental
breakfast. At 10:00, parents will meet
with faculty and staff around the
auditorium and Communications
Building. Lunch will be served out
doors at 11:30, lasting approximately
two hours.
At 2:00 p.m., the formal Honors Day
program will be held. After the pro
gram, parents will have a chance to
tour the campus. “We are anticipating
from 500 to 750 parents on this cam
pus,” stated Wilson. “They will be
treated to all kinds of exhibits at this
time. It’s really a giant PTA meeting.”
“It’s always a pleasure to work and
prepare to recognize students for high
academic achievements,” said Mrs.
Maurice Johnson, director of the
Enrichment Center and chairperson
for this event. She said it not only gives
the community an opportunity to see
students recognized, but parents as
well.
