Jackson has dropped his call for a Black boycott of Anheuser-Busch products because the world’s largest brewery has pledged more than $320 million to minorities in the next five years. Jackson’s group. Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), ended its year-long battle with Anheuser-Busch over the brewery’s treatment of minorities in allocating jobs, business contracts and beer distributorships. Jackson and August A. Busch ni, president and chairman of the' brewery, issued a joint state ment Sept. 9 outlining an agree ment to improve economic oppor tunities for minorities. “We are determined to strengthen our partnership with the minority community,” Busch said. “We are determined, moreover, that nothing our com pany does shall contribute to any divisiveness in the community.” About 18 percent of the brewery’s work force is minority, but Busch has promised to con tinue hiring Blacks and Hispanics in proportion to population figures. As part of the agreement, the brewery will set aside at least $23 million for contracts with minori ty suppliers, $120 million with minority construction companies and $8 million in advertising with minority-owned media. Minority-owned banks will receive at least $2 million in cer tificates of deposit, $6 milUon in lines of credit and $6 million in payroll deposits, the statement announced. Anheuser-Busch also said it will increase the number of minority-owned distributorships beyond the current three owned by Blacks and three owned by Hispanics. Jackson and Operation PUSH called for a boycott of Anheuser- Bxisch products last September after attacking the brewei^’s minority policies. Jackson said a recent meeting with Busch had convinced him the company was committed to minorities. “We recognize that this pro gram represents a base and we look forward to future an nouncements of various new pro grams designed to build on this effort,” Jackson said.
