The Art & Music Department of the Forsyth County Public Library presents drawings by Karen O’Brien Smallen throughout the month of October in the Main Library Gallery, A native of Buffalo, New York, Karen has resided in Winston-Salem for 5-years. She holds a Batchelor of Science Degree in Art Education from Nazareth College of Rochester and a Master of Science in Art Education from State University College at Buffalo. She has taught various children’s classes and adult drawing at Art & Crafts/Sawtooth Center, as well as serving as Youth Co-ordinator for a time. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, October 2, 1983 from 3:00-4:00pm in the Art & Music Room. The public is cordially invited to attend the reception and to view this exhibit during the library’s regular hours. On The Yard... CONGRATULATIONS TO: •Dr. Pauline Fulton of the Department of Communication Arts. The National Council of Teachers of English recnetly announced her appointment as a regional judge for the 1983 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing Program. Through this nationally recognized competition, now in its 25th year, approximately 800 high school seniors are cited for excellence in writing and are recommended to colleges and universities for admission and for financial aid, if needed. Seven tho^and students have been nominated for NCTl!. awards in 1983. •or. Astor Herrell, chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences. He has been selected for inclusion in a special multi-media learning program being developed by the Young Adult Services Division of the Martin Luther King Memorial Library, Washington, D.C. The program is designed to expose the library’s patrons to the numerous technological accomplishments that have been made by black people. •Dr. Donald Suttles of the Department of Business. A CPA, he was recently honored by the Piedmont Winston-Salem Chapter of the National Association of Accountants as a co-winner of the outstanding member award. King, Jeffery Osborne To Headline Lyceum Series Blue giant B.B. King will kickoff the 1983 Performing Arts Series of Lynceum Cultural Events at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). King will be presented at 8 p.m. October 6, in the Ken neth R. Williams Auditorium at WSSU. Tickets, $8 in advance and $10 the day of the show, can be purchased weekdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the auditorium box office. The remainder of the series features song stylist Jeffrey Osborne with rhythm and blues band Atlantic Star on October 26, the play Harlem Nocturne February 28, 1984, and the Joseph Holmes Dance Theatre on March 28. Tickets for the Osborne-Atlantic Star show are $8 in ad vance, $10 day of the show. Tickets for the other programs are $5 in advance, $7 the day of the show. Season tickets are on sale for $22. There are five other series of Lynceum Cultural Events—Visual Arts Series, University Fine Arts Festival, Joseph N. Patterson Lecture and Assembly Series, Institutional Exchange Series and the Academic Series.
