Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was
founded at Howard University by Brothers
A. Langston Taylor, Charles I. Brown, and
Leonard F. Morse on January 9,1914. This
fraternity was the last founded of the black
greek fraternities, but the first to exist at
Winston-Salem State University. The
Delta Alpha Chapter was organized at
WSSU on April 24, 1932 and has existed
ever since trying to better mankind by tak
ing an active role in society.

Johnson, Poet, composer of the Black Na
tional Anthem; Julian Bond, Politician,
civil rights activist; George Gervin, NBA
player; Alain Leroy Locke, First Black
Rhodes Scholar; George Washington
Carver, Inventor Scientist; Maurice
White, and Roy Ayers - Professional Musi
cians; and Howard Rollins, Acotr, Model,
and Entertainer are some of the more
distinguished men of “Blue and White.”
The purpose of Phi Beta Sigma is to pro
mote Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Ser
vice by implementing its national pro
grams; Bigger & Better Business, Social
Action, and Education. Contrary to the
negative beliefs concerning fraternities,
the main objective is “to improve
ourselves and mankind by taking active
roles at the university and community by
becoming a part of worthwhile organiza
tions.” Some of the affiliated organizations
include the following: American Cancer
Society, Congressional Black Caucus,
NAACP, National Alliance of Black
Organizations, National Foundation of the
March of Dimes, National Urban League
and the United Negro College Fund. Also,
to be role models for those men interested
in Sigma.
Membership of the fraternity is limited
to college men who have completed at
least 15 semester hours. No person who is a
member of another inter-collegiate frater
nity other than an honorary or professional
fraternity shall be eligible. No person shall
be eligible for membership unless he is in
attendance at WSSU and has a cumulative
average of 2.3 or better. Each candidate
for membership shall attend the Interest
Meeting and Smoker, make an application
to the chapter, and have an interview; if
such a candidate is favorable by the
members, he shall be eligible for initiation
into the Crescent Club. The chapter would
like to invite all interested persons to talk
to them for further questions.
The officers for the 1983-84 academic
year are as follows: Anthony Ragland,
President; Stacy Goodson, Vice-
President; Danny Torian, Treasurer;
Troy Russell, Secretary; John Watkins,
Chancellor; Richard Carson, Chaplain;
Greg Jones, Dean of Pledgees. Members
at large include Brian Crenshaw, Calvin
Ray Finger, Gary Farrington, Steve
Gilmore, Maurice Johnson, Ricky Morris,
and Brian Womble.

On September 7,1983, the Student Alum
ni Relations Association held its Annual
Membership Drive Meeting. The turn-out
was quite impressive, which strongly sup
ported the notion that S.A.R.A. is a
bonafide campus organization at Winston-
Salem State University. There were more
than 75 students present to join this
prestigious organization.
The Student Alumni Relations Associa
tion was organized on the campus in the
fall of 1975. At that time, there were ap
proximately 35 members. S.A.R.A. cur
rently has a membership of about 95
members. The members of S.A.R.A. are
required to possess a grade point average
of no less than 2.0.
S.A.R.A., like all organizations has a
purpose. Members must recognize the ob
jectives and purpose of the university.
These primary objectives are to offer ap
propriate educational programs to the stu
dent body. Alumni, and the surrounding
community. One of S.A.R.A.’s goals is to
motivate intellectual and moral growth.
The ultimate goal for S.A.R.A. is to
develop a better working relationship bet
ween the university and the Alumni.
S A R A’s president for the 1983-84
school year is Lisa Gordon from
Washington, D.C. Lisa is a senior working
deligently to ensure success for S.A.R.A-
She has a very strong supportive host of of
ficers- Vice-President - Wilbur Streeter, a
Junior from Asheville, N.C., Secretary
Kim Doggett, a Senior from Greensboro,
N.C. Treasurer - Jeff Lowery, a Junior
from Asheville, N.C., Ms. S.A.R.A. - Tonya
Lowe a Junior from Greensboro, N.C.
Finally, Alan E. Reid, a Senior from
Washington, D.C., anchors the strong host
of officers as Director of Public Relations.
The Advisor for S.A.R.A. is Mr. Joseph H.
Daniels and the Co-Advisor is Mr. Winslow
Lowery, Director of Alumni Affairs.
S A.R.A. 1983-S4 would like to wish all
organizations a successful year.
