Page 3 Yes, It’s Homecoming Y’All By Cynthia McPhail Homecoming at Winston-Salem State University has various meanings, ranging from formal to informal phases. To some it means attending the annual homecoming game and meeting old acquaintances. But to others, it means attending very formal engagements, such as the Alumni Ball or Reception held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. During homecoming week at “SU” it is not uncommon to hear students and some alumni chanting “it’s homecoming y’all.” But really what is homecoming? Rhonda Wright, a sophomore from VA. says “On Homecoming Day at WSSU, the colors of red and white are distinctively exhibited on campus at the game and dur ing the parade. A lot of alumni come back to their Alma Mater showing their ap preciation to a university that has given them knowledge,” she says. "I’m so glad that there’s a day called Homecoming, because WSSU brings out the potential in individuals who want to better themselves,” Ms. Wright continues. “Participating in Homecoming activities is a way of showing their appreciation.” Tonya Johnson, a freshman and a High Point native, states with enthusiasm “Homecoming is an array of colors, hav ing to adjust to the real aspects of college life and really showing school spirit.” “Homecoming is when all the alumni get together with old acquaintances and with students from their hometown,” says Beverly Cook, a sophomore English major from Winston-Salem. “Really, it’s more like a family reunion but classier.” “I feel that homecoming is one of the biggest happenings on campus,” says Felicia Williams, another student. Annette Jordan, a junior from Gatatia, N.C. says, “1 feel that homecoming is one of the biggest occasions on campus. It is a time for parades, pep rallies, football games, new frien^hips, just a time for fund, fun, fun.” Shelli Mercer, a junior Nursing Major from Cambridge, Mass., feels that homecoming is “the biggest celebration of the year. It’s a time when alumni, students, friends, and families join the students in celebrating the fact that we are proud to be a part of WSSU.” “Homecoming reflects on the past of our university. It’s a time to reminisce and laugh about the good ol’ days,” says Iris Thomas from Charlotte, N.C. Whether homecoming is today or next week, we all will agree that it’s a time to get loose and enjoy the beauty and ex cellence of our university. Some less-involved students say that it’s only just an annual celebration for retiring alumni, but it’s the love and bond between the future rams and the graduates. Echoe- ing the thoughts of Mrs. Jordan stated earlier, “it’s the out-pouring of school spirit and just good ole’ fun, fun, fun!!!” WSNG FM 90.5 Voice of the Rams Plays the Best in Progressive Music Members of the WSSU Marching Band whoop it up during last year’s mini-parade.
