Page 10 Sports Russell leads way Rams take Schlitz Classic by Sam Davis The Rams won their second straight tournament title in two weeks, beating Voorhees College 83-62 last Friday night (Dec. 2) and downing pesky Elizabeth City last Saturday (Dec. 3) by an 82-63 score, to win the annual Schlitz Basketball Classic in the C. E. Gaines Center. Troy Russell led the Rams in scoring both nights, pumping in 24 against Voorhees and adding a season-high 37 points in the tournament’s finale. The sharp-shooting New York City native struggled in the early-goings against Elizabeth City, hitting only 5 of his 18 first- half attempts. However, in the final stanza Russell warmed up, swishing 8 of 9 shots through the hoop. Russell also grapped a game high 15 rebounds in the second game. Freshman swingman Linwood Gorham is 22 points also aided the Rams in their victory over Voorhees. Gorham’s outside shooting allowed the Rams to stretch their lead in a crucial period in the second half after Voorhees pulled within & points. Coach C. E. “Bighouse” Gaines said the Rams are still playing “sloppy basket ball” and will have to improve in several areas if they are to contend for the CIAA crown in the ’83-84 season. With Norfolk State, Virginia State and Virginia Union on the Rams schedule for the upcoming week, the Rams will need to improve in a hurry, according to Gaines. Pivotman Kevin (“Seville”) Vaugn con tinued to show improvement on his inside game. The 6’6”, Philadelphia has been go ing to the offensive and defensive boards with more authority and confidence than a year ago. Showing signs of his off-season strength and conditioning program, Vaugn has been a dominant force in the Rams early-season progress. I 1 I. L ^ .
