Miller Calenders Salutes Living Black ^‘Heroes MILWAUKEE (November 21, 1983)-In its 11th annual calendar, the Miller Brew ing Company salutes tsoth living black heroes and heroines and pioneers in their fields, “The Legacy—Living It,” features 12 Black Americans who have reached the pinnacle of success in their professions, and 12 historical figures in similar fields who laid the foundation for those achievements. “Each of us is indebted to others for the things we accomplish in life,” said Miller Senior Vice President Thomas Shropshire. “Some of our benefactors are easily identified-our parents, a particularly helpful teacher, our pastor, a good friend. But many of them are unknown to us--men and women we never met who struggled and sacrificed so that the next generation would have a better life. “ ‘The Legacy—Living It’ is a tribute to those unknown men and women and the many who followed them.” The living achievers include Con gressman Parren J. Mitchell; busmesswoman Patricia Walker Shaw; actor James Earl Jones; author Alex Haley; Rancher Ocie Jackson; Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley; educator Dr. Benjamin Mays; jazz musician Jay McShann; educator Marva Collins; baseball star Reggie Jackson; medical researcher Dr. James H. Thomas; and Houston police chief Lee Brown. Their predecessors include Hiram Revels, the first black U.S. Senator; Emily Fisher, a former slave turned successful hotelier; actor Ira Aldridge; Henry Bibb, a former slave who became an author; cowboy Bill Pickett; P.B.S. Pinchback the first black governor; educator and reformer Booker T. Washington; ragtime composer Scott Joplin; Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave who was one of the main “conductors” on the Underground Railroad that led north to freedom; baseball legend Jackie Robinson; Dr. Charles Drew, who developed the method for using blood plasma instead of whole blood; and Lafayette A. Tillman, the first black policeman in Kansas City. Miller is an operating company of Philip Morris Incorporated.
