News Argus Attends D,C, Conference
By Charles Cession and
Connie Lowery
Eight students from WSSU along with
Ms. Felecia Jones, Faculty Advisor for
The News Argus, were among the
delegates at an investigative journalism
seminar recently in Washington, D.C.
The conference was designed to bridge
the gap between the professional news
reporters and students interested in pursu
ing careers in this area.
One of the more interesting seminars en
titled “Sources” proved to be very infor
mative. James Polk from an NBC affiliate
in the Washington area was extremely im
pressive in his address to the students.
Much information was gained on the
development, cultivation and protection of
the reporter’s sources.
Laura Stepp from the Washington Post
was the highlight of the discussion, “In
Long Range Investigative Projects.”
Many points were brought out pertaining
to long-range and short-term writings and
the differences of rewards for each assign
ment.
“Smaller Newspapers,” another
seminar, was conducted by Skip Hidlay
from The Charlotte Observer (who later
had lunch with the News Argus staff). He
spoke on how to get started in journalism
with local newspapers.
The final step of public understanding,
“Writing,” was conducted by Rick Atkin
son from the Kansas City Times and Les
Whitten (author and columnist).
Demonstrations of organization and
writing techniques were illustrated. They
encouraged the use of literary expression
as well as chronological order in the
writing of news articles and books.
Each seminar concluded with an open

discussion where questions were address
ed and answered.
The keynote speaker was Jack Anderson
from The Washington Post. He elaborated
on “Oil Gate” (the Nixon error) as being
something even greater than Watergate.
He was very dramatic and fluent in man
nerism and vocal inflections.
The seminar was conducted on the cam
pus of George Washington University and
consisted of 12 discussion divided into four
groups of three.
From the seminar, the journalism staff
left Washington enlightened and inspired
from the exposure to such noted jour
nalists as those at the conference.
