Entertainment Spot Light Survivin’ in the 80’s on the yard off the yard by Angela Corbett Alpha Kappa Mu Inducts 5 By now almost everyone has heard the new sound in popular music known as the “Minneapolis” sound. This sound was made popular by Prince and adopted by groups such as Time and Vanity 6. With the recent break-up of both Time and Vani ty 6, it would seem that with the exception of Prince, The Minneapolis sound is dead. But don’t dispair music lover, an almost forgotten Minneapolis rocker has reap peared on the scene, and this time he may have outdone the Master himself. I am talking about Andre Cymone and his new album is entitled “Srvivin’ in the 80’s.” Cymone, former bass player for the Prince band, has taken the hard funk sound associated with Prince, removed the sexual undertones, added his own color and flair and come up with a new sound that is unique, powerful, and above all fun to listen to. Andre Cymone’s first solo album, “Living in the New Wave”, released in 1982 has several hits, such as the title cut “Living in the New Wave”, “The Ritz” and a moving ballad “All I Need Is You”. The album as a whole, however, lacked mass appeal. It sold largly to Prince fans wanting to see how closly Cymone’s sounds would immitate the Prince sound. Most were pleasantly surprised at the new Cymone sound, and “Survivin’ in the 80’s only goes to prove that Andre Cymone is more than just another Prince clone. Andre Cymone wrote and produced this entire album, proving his ability as both a producer and a composer. The music on this album speaks for his ability as a per former. The first single to be released from “Survivin’ in the 80’s” is a song en titled “Makes Me Wanna Dance.” It is a hard rocking dance cut already working it’s way up the charts. It has the hard driv ing bass line that made Andre Cymone popular, as well as excellent vocals by Cymone. Although “Survivin’ in the 80’s” is filled to the brim with excellent dance cuts, it is more than just another dance album. As the title suggests, this album is somewhat of a vinyl survival manual for the 80’s. Songs from this album such as the title cut “Survivin’ in the 80’s,” and “What Are We Doing Here” c6me across as a welcome musical change for a future-shocked generation. “Survivin’ in the 80’s,” on the Columbia label, is sure to be one of the hottest albums of 1984. It’s hard driving, powerful music proves that the Minneapolis sound is alive and well. The Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society at WSSU recently inducted five new members. They are Michael Baker, Charlotte; Kelvin Dunlap, Wadesboro; Towana Gunter, Irvington; Shelia Ijames, Statesville; and Ricardo Lewis, Winston- Salem.
