Dana Caulder Miss WSSU 1984-85
by Tujuana Evans
What do Army fatigues, a jewel crown, and accounting have in common for a WSSU
senior?
These three things are special to Miss WSSU, 1984-85 Dana Caulder.
A native of Lumberton, N.C., Caulder is a graduate of Reidross Senior High School in
Fayetteville, N.C. She is the daughter of Carl Caulder.
She is a senior majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in accoun
ting. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity and is WSSU’s first
queen scheduled to be commissioned in the United States Army as 2nd Lieutenant on
Reserve Forces Duty at the May 1985 Commencement ceremony.
When asked why did she choose to run for the office, Caulder stated that she ran for
Miss WSSU because she felt that she “was qualified to represent the university.” She
also felt that she had worked closely with the previous Miss WSSU and that she knew
what the job entailed and was certain she could get the job done.
■^e job of teing Miss WSSU is not as glamorous as it seems. It is not only a title, but an
office too. Miss WSSU works just as hard and under just as much pressure as the other
SGA officers. The job consists of planning the coronation, meeting with other college
campus queens, and runmng various meetings and other jobs that contribute to a suc
cessful Homecoming.
Mss Caulder’s advice to any young lady who would like to seek the office of Miss WSSU
is “to present herself in a lady Uke manner at all times, keep a positive attitude and
always be yourself.”
‘ I would like to thank the Ram Family for all the support they have given me, and for
giving me the chance to reign as Miss Winston-Salem State University,” said Caulder.

Mr. Ram 1984
by Mark Sadler
“All The Right Moves” was the theme of
this year’s Mr. Ram Pageant.
This year, William Bess, David Berry,
Amos Wilson, Clarke Poston all of Winston-
Salem, N.C. and Gary Morris of Windsor,
N.C. participated in the event.
Karl Menefee and Sherry Leonard were
the host for the show. Judges for this event,
were Gail Brandon, Marian Brower, Carole
J. Bryson, Pat Reid, Charles Burns, Ber
nard Foy, and Sidney Hibbert.
To become Mr. Ram; the contestants par
ticipated in a series of evaluations. First
there was a Fashion Dimensions, where the
contestants modeled clothes that could ex
press himself. This segment was followed
by a Talent Dimension where the contestant
expressed his talent.
In the final segment each contestant was
asked a question where he had to answer it
logically.
Finally, three winners are chosen. The
1984-85 Ram Pageant’s winners were se
cond runner-up, Clarke Poston; first
runner-up, William Bess and Mr. Ram
1984-85 is Gary Morris of Windsor, N.C.
Morris stated “as Mr. Ram, I would like
to help in anyway possible with the Student
Government Association and to represent
my school to the best of my ability.
Moms said he decided to run because he
felt, “it takes a special person to be Mr.
Ram. He feels that the possesses that
leadership ability.”
When asked how he felt about winning the
contest he said, “It’s a dream come true, I
feel great.”
Ms. Elaine P. Browne, co-ordinator of this
event feels that “the pageant is the most ex
citing student production of the year, using
student’s talent. It’s a learning experience
as well. It’s a challenging experience for the
men who participate,” she said.
“It’s also a composite of qualities to instill
poise, dignity and self-respect in the partici
pant, I enjoy working with each contestant,
to me all of them are winners, I enjoy it
each year,” she continued.
