I H ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ 1 ■ jMBHI im H ■ HI m Mass Communication Major By Angela Miller The major numerous students have been waiting for here at Winston-Salem State University has finally been approved. Mass Communications is officially a ma jor. The major was approved during the sum mer by the General Administration of the University of North Carolina system. It was a process that took eight long years to be completed. It took a long time because, when deciding or planning to get a new major the college does not make the decision. The addition of new majors at a university must be granted by the General Administration. Mass Communication majors will learn how to communicate to large groups of peo ple through print media and broadcast media. The new major will help Winston- Salem State University students develop their communication skills as they explore career opportunities in Mass Communica tions. According to Clarence W. Thomas, Coor dinator of the Mass Communication Pro gram, several courses have been approved and three new courses will be offered in the programs spring semester. The new courses include a public relations course, an advertising course and second part to a course already in existence. Dr. Valerie S. Saddler, has joined the Communications Arts faculty to help with the teaching of the new journalism courses. Ms. Marilyn Roseboro, Winston-Salem State University’s public relations director is a part-time instructor on the Communica tions Arts’ faculty. One of the brightest stars in our galaxy is Riga!. Page 11 The Enrichment Center Has Much To Offer By Angela Corbett It is no laughing matter when at mid-term you receive two “F” slips and drop two classes. Now you only have 9 hours. You’re not even clasified as a full-time student. Have no fear...help is on the way - tutors. When you feel that all hope is lost because you can’t quite comprehend something an instructor has explained, a fellow peer may be able to make some clarifications. Stu dent tutors are in the Enrichment Center. They are willing and able to help those who are determined to help themselves. However, one visit can’t produce miracles; but weekly visits may show positive im provement. Student tutors provide a com fortable setting in which a student can be relaxed and not intimidated by fellow classmates. Therefore improving grades in the classroom. This is what tutoring is all about. Ms. Maurice Johnson is the director of the Enrichment Center ant its tutorial services. According to Ms. Johnson, tutors are chosen for classes which are in great demand at the beginning of the school year. In order to ac quire tutors, instructors are asked for their best students of the previous year. If the students are interested then some form of payment is worked out. Work study is one compensation: while some students volunteer. Currently, the Enrichment Center has six students which tutor the following courses: David Johnson, Accounting; Joann Maiden, Biology I and Chemistry I and II; Tony Herring, Biology, Math 1300,1311, and 1312; Karen Hicks, Math 1300,1311,1312,1313 and Calculus; Sylvester Pittman, Math 1300, 1311, 1312, 1313 and Calculus; and Ricky Preston, Elementary Spanish. Evidentally students are either are unaware or ignoring such a beneficial ser vice offered here on campus. Student tutors as well as the Enrichment Center itself have something to offer WSSU students. “Although we do not have tutors for every course, resources are available that are self-teaching,” Ms. Johnson explained. “Therefore students are encouraged to come in and see what the Enrichment Center has to offer.” November Dates Areas of Interest Company/Agency Majors Time Stockbrokers Teachers Graduate Study ALL Education ALL Edward D.
