Page 2 The Friendship Force ...A group that spreads Clara Carlton Merry Christmas from Carolyn, and May your New Year be a better year. I want you to always remember that I love you and always will. May God be with you! Carolyn T. Fleming friendship The Enrichment by Tujuanna Evans “A world of friends is a world of peace” is the motto of The Friendship Force. What is the purpose of The Friendship Force? The Friendship Force is an organization that encourages people to travel around the world to promote friendship to people of other countries. The organization is not only an exchange program for students, it is for anyone who is interested in promoting-friendship between people of several countries. Mrs. James Hunt, the wife of governor Jim Hunt became interested in the Friend ship Force and therefore turned it into a huge success. The organization was originally started in Georgia in 1977, but a chapter was started here in Winston-Salem in 1980. To become a member of the organization all one must do is join. No rigid qualification are necessary for membership. The force travels to 27 countries including the United States. The Winston-Salem Chapter has already traveled to West Germany, Wales, Tokyo and China. Rev. Cedric Rodney, the university’s chaplain is not only a member of the organization but he is communication chairmen. If anyone is interested in The Friendship Force and would like to know more about it just simply go by his office in the Kenneth R. Williams auditorium or call 765-0019. Center BEARDS! by Ann Hawkins Do you prefer the stern, macho, covered look? Or the smooth clean, innocent look? Does “it” allow you to be different? Can you choose the attitude you want to portray? Is “it” thick or thin, black, brown, red, or blonde? Does “it” complement your daring eyes, or hide unwanted flaws? Is “it” part of your dress, or could you do without “it”? Does your baiiy face appear more mature or does your mature face appear more babyish? Does “it” complement the hair on your chest? Yes, the look of the 80’s is beards - close- ( ut and very well-groomed. Not only are the fnen in favor of the beard but the women are also. In a survey, ten women were asked what turns them on. Their response was eight to two. Eight of them go to men with beards, and two of them go to the man with the clean-shaven face. The opinions of the women agreeing on the clean-shaven faces were that “mainly the man appears to be neater, more business-like, appers to be gentle, and not as apt to be flirtatious.” But the overall opi nions of the women who like beards were that “men appear to be more macho, distinguished, stern and, of course, sexy.” Most men appear to be more mature; and it actually excites some women to play with a man’s beard. Most of the women enjoy the hair rubbing against their faces while being embraced. Their overall favorite color for beards is black. by Constance Lowery In the latter part of November, an in vestigation took place. It took about an hour. And through this investigation - some important and interesting facts were discovered (much more than had been an ticipated). Here are the results. One cannot make the investigation and come out without enthusiasm and a broadened sense of self worth. What is so interesting, is that, much knowledge can be gained and appreciated through the investigation, and many other students are taking the advantage of it. If students are serious about improving themselves, then the Enrichment Center is the place to go to study. The time has come to bridge the gap between Research and school practice. There are so many exciting things, (it is like a wonderland for students.) from talk ing encyclopedia to creating your own posters and transperancies. If help is needed on ideas with Bulletin boards, filmstrips, it is all there to be used. There are tapes and aides on almost any subject for step by step usage. “Many students are doing better as a result of these books (called Problem Solvers), in subjects, says Mrs. Maurice Johnson, Head of the Enrichment Center. Often times, instructors want research done on papers and other projects, and if the library cannot be used, the Enrichment Center can. The main reason for the Enrichment Center is to aid students/instructors with materials, viedo equipment or whatever is necessary. Special grouping can be set up for 10 or more for any project or practice testing procedure there are many in dividual learning aides. The Enrichment Center has a pleasant at mosphere in which to study, as well as a friendly one. Typewriters, foreign language material, Clep information, slides, study guides, duplications, you name it and it’s there. There is very little that can be seen from the outside, but on the inside it is a whole new view. For oral presentations, the aides available are indescribable and in history, a complete set of tapes and book on World Civilization I and II. Such information is shared on how to study, how to listen, how to take notes and how to write. Student workers and Mrs. Johnson and Miss Porter will help you to get started. The Graphic lab can also be used by ap pointment. Mrs. Johnson, explained that there was a full time person, on staff but not enough students come in to use the lab, therefore this person was lost. Such things as portfolios, written reports, multiple copies and numerous other func tions can be done in graphics. Since it takes applicability in classes, it strikes me as being important when it comes to personal utility. Mrs. Johnson has made a believer out of me, to become an improved person in the coming semesters. Tutors are selected, according to Mrs. Johnson, at the beginning of the semester, and whatever subjects students request help in, tutors are made available. In my opinion, the Enrichment Center can be the link between success and failure in courses. So, go for an investigation, from 8 to 5, the results will, in fact, enlighten you. SARA Plans For Spring Activities by Angela Corbett SARA students currently represent the of fspring of approximately 10 graduates who attended WSSU nearly two decades ago. One of the major activities SARA plans for the spring semester is a program featur ing the history of WSSU during Black History Month, Local and campus graduates will be participants in this educa tional activity. It is strongly felt that students should be informed about the history of this institution. Another planned spring event is the SARA students participation in the Alumni Unity Day. It will be held in Winston-Salem at the Winston Stouffer Hotel on April 5-6, 1985. SARA students are also seeking alum ni sponsors to help keep their alumni ac tivities expanding. All donations are beneficial to the students as well as the alumni who make contributions. SARA, an Alumni related association is advised by Mr. Joe Daniels; Co-advised by Ms. Shanlon Hudson and Ms. Gwen Johnson, director of alumni. Why hones Can you imagine being out on a cold night, stranded after class in a new building, with no telephone to use? Well this happened. And to walk from the RJR Building to the Fine Arts building and the telephone has been torn up by someone (pulled completely off the older!) It is ridiculous when students thinks pranks such as doing foolish things like pull ing phones apart is something to do. There could really be a serious problem and telephone could save a life. Students are always crying out - “Treat us like adults” - Well, act like adults! Stop the foolishness, it hurts us as well as the school. Constance Lowery Airlines Engage in Airfare War by Victor Watts For the last two weeks two major airlines have changed prices of their one way flights between the Greensboro Regional Airport and La Guardia Airport in New York. The two major airlines are Eastern and Piedmont will begin competiting with Peo ple Express the well known discount airline. People Express recently announced that they will have five round trip flights a day for only $49.00 during peak hour and $35.00 after 7 p.m. and weekends. People Express can offer lower prices because of their no frills concept. This means the company offers no baggage check in, ticket booth, walkway or food ser vices but will provide some of them at addi tional cost. Piedmont plans to add three more round trip nights to bring it up to five a day same as Peoples Express. People Express feels that regular travelers including college students want transportation and their offering it at a price that average people can afford.
