Spell from Fayet teville, N.C., is currently majoring in Medical Technology. He attended Cape Fear High School, which is a Division 4-A school. The change from high school to the col lege level was not an easy one for Spell, “There is a great transition from the high school to the college level, because there are better quality athletes and the system is somewhat different. According to Spell, he will be able to con tribute to the Rams both academically and athletically. He also wants to work hard and always be the best player he can be. Spell also played football and baseball in high school, where he earned all conference, all city-county awards in foot ball and basketball, carrying leadership responsibilities on the basketball team. I had to set examples for the other players, both on the court and off the court. Spell remarked. Spell choose to attend WSSU because he was looking for a coach who he could have great respect for, and that coach happened to be Clarence E. “Big House” Gaines. by Robert Toran In a recent wrestling tournament held at Winston-Salem State University three wrestlers representing WSSU placed high in their respective weight classes. Jimmy Hester, (134) Robert Toran (150) and Dean Smith (158) were the recipients of 2 3rd place titles and a second place. While, Dean Smith a senior from Walnut Cove and Robert Tolan a junior from Norfolk, Va. won 5 out of 6 both placing 3rd respectively in the tournament. Some of the teams participating in the tournament were Appalachian State, The Citadel, Liv ingstone, Campbell, Barber Scotia, Longwood, Pembroke State and Chowah College. The WSSU wrestling, team as a whole also performed very well in the tournament, and the team is looking forward to a good year and strong finish as they prepare to win the CIAA Championship for the 6th con secutive year. WSSU loses a heartbreaker toNSU by Robert Toran The Rams of Winston-Salem State University, winners of CIAA Southern Divi sion, traveled to Norfolk to battle the Spar- tons of Norfolk State University and the CIAA Northern division winners. Both teams came into the championship game boosting very impressive 9-1 records. Play ing before a crowd of over 16,000. The two teams played in a very exciting and very hard fought contest. The Rams came into the contest with a high powered offense that led the whole entire CIAA in scoring. Whereas the Spartans relied on their strong defense that was ranked number 1 in the CIAA. WSSU scored first as they capitalized on a Spartan turnover, Tyrone Smith kicked a 33 yd. field goal that gave the Rams an early 3-0 lead. The Spartans took a 7-3 lead when quarter back Raynard revels threw a 7 yd touchdown pass to William Wright. Winston-Salem drove down into NSU ter ritory but had to settle for a 40 yd field goal by Tyrone Smith narrowing the Spartan lead to 7-6 after the first quarter of play. Norfolk State then scored 10 unanswered points in the second quarter when Anthony Johnson scored from 3 yds, out and NSU kicker Dale Browder connected on a 35 yd field goal, giving the Spartans a 17-6 half time lead. The Rams came out strong in the second half as they scored 2 touchdowns in third quarter, the first touchdown was when Winbush threw a 8 yd pass to Robert Sim mons and Winbush scored himself from a yard out. But the extra point was missed, the Rams regained the lead 19-17 after 3 quarters. In the 4th quarter, Spartans once again took the lead 20-19 on a Dale Browder 38 yd field foal with 3:32 seconds remaining in the game. The Rams drove deep into Norfolk territory and and Tyrone Smith attempted a field goal for the win, but the field goal at tempt hit the left upright of the goal post shattering the Rams chance of winning the CIAA Championship as the team lost a heartbreaker 20-19.
