Willie, a Harvard Univer sity Professor and distinguished writer/sociologist was the guest speaker at WSSU’s birthday celebration of slain civil rights activist. Dr. Martin Luther King. This lecture was given as a part of the Joseph N. Patterson Lecturer Series held on Sunday, January 13,1985. In reminiscing, Dr. Willie remembered King, his former schoolmate as a “fun-loving guy,” a Nobel Peace Prize win ner, and a leader of men.” Some say that King was ahead of his time, but the speaker remembered the words of the late, Dr. Mays, former president of Morehouse Col lege at King’s euology; “Every man is within his own time. Each man responds to the calling of the Lord in his time, not so meone elses.” Willie then remembered that King had received the respect of his peers and his elders at the age of 21. Mays said, “King seems to know where he wants to go and how to get there.” Dr. Willie saw King’s dream fulfilled; he saw the manifestations of love and mercy; the beginning of reconcilliation; the peace and hope for tomorrow as he quoted him saying. “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life, longevity has its place, but I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do Grod’s will. He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain and I’ve looked over, and I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with Him, but I won’t you to know tonight, that we the people will get to the promised land. I’m not worried about anything. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” The News Argus Salutes Black Hanes Woman of the Year History Month The News Argus ’ Staff
