Football Players enjoying Aerobics Photo by Bonita Perry Remaining Games For Men’s Basketball Robert’s Corner: An Interview With Dean Smith by Robert Toran Dean Smith, a native of Walnut Cove, North Carolina is a senior at Winston- Salem State University majoring in physical Education. Dean graduated a tri- athlete from South Stokes High School. He participated in football as a full back, wrestling at 138, 145, 155 pound weight classes combining a 60-12-3 record in that period and also placing 6th in the state tour nament his senior year in high school He was also involved with the track team specializing in the long jump, 400 meters, 200 meters and mile relay, each of which he took first place in. Dean wanted to further his education so he accepted a wrestling scholarship from W.S.S.U. Here at W.S.S.U. Dean has con tinued to perform well in wrestling, and has excelled to the top. Some of Dean’s accomplishments at Winston-Salem State are as follows: He has a combined record of 52-14, 1982 CIAA champion, 1982 NAIA champion, 1982 NCAA regional winner and most outstanding wrestler in the Pembroke Invitational. Now Dean is looking forward to repeating as 1985 CIAA champion and qualifying for NCAA nationals division II March 1 & 2. The team is under the direction of eight year head coach, A1 Roseboro. Due to academic ineligibility, the team will be losing from three to five players. Ac cording to the second year captain, James Roach, poor recruiting is a contributing fac tor to the Rams losing record last year. Roach, a junior Business Administration major is from Rockland Mass. “Another factor is that WSSU’s Athletic Department isn't willing to pay the tuition for the tennis players. Most of the players must pay their own tuition including myself,” explained Roach. Dave Alston is one. Alston is a senior ma joring in Business Administration and a native of Medford Mass. Alston wasn’t on the squad last season, but he should be rank ed in the lop three, in this years squad. Owen Scoggins will be another positive force on the Rams roster. Scoggins, a sophomore, majoring in Special Education and is a native of Durham N.C. He will be rated number 2 or 3 on the team this year. The team will play approximately 18 mat ches this season. Their first match will be on March 1st. Johnson C. Smith University won the Southern Division Championship last season and are favored again this year.
