Senior Is Pledging Worthwhile? By Rita Archer Staff Reporter Is pledging really worth it? This question pops into minds when students see John Doe marching down the street singing “We’re going to fight we’re going to stand til we reach frat land. ’ In asking this question, two fraternity members both agreed that pledging was a worthwhile involvement to them. “Pledging opens ap your mind and helps you to face reality”, says Rhett Butler an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity member. Terry Anderson feels that pledging helped him academically. “I pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity because I possessed leadership ability that I could apply to the fraternity itself’. Do people change after the pledge period is over? Rhett feels that some people do change, but he hasn't. But the attitudes and treatment by others has changed toward him. Is pledging what it used to be? According to instructors Beaufort Bailey, a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Roland Watts, a Kappa Alpha Psi member. Pledg ing had changed greatly. “Academics should be stressed more along with a more constructive purpose in the sorority and fraternity organization”, said Bailey. “He also feels that hazing should be cut out.” Watts feels that being a part of sorority or fraternity gives you a sense of belonging and promotes manhood and womanhood. He also concedes that organizations used to be a little more worthwhile primarily because things were more versatile than they used to be. Pledging is left up to an individual along with deciding the sorority or fraternity in which one should be a part. What are your view points on this sub ject? Do You Really Think That Pledging Is Worth it?
