Matthews STAFF REPORTER "Today's black students need to improve their communication skills and their problem solving skills," says Dr. Lorenzo Battie, a pro fessor and the chairman of the Social Science Department here at WSSU. Employed Aug. 1, 1987, Battle has brought to this university experience, expertise and a unique and professional method of instruction. He believes that students should strive for perfection, but that learning should not be painful, he said. He earned his B.A. degree in history and political science from North Carolina Central University in Durham, a masters of art in Polit ical Science from Columbia University in New York and a Ph.D. from Camegie-Mellon Uni versity in Pittsburgh, Pa. He has published several manuscripts and belongs to a list of professional and social organizations, including the American Associ ation of Higher Education, American A-ssocia- tion of University Professors, American His torical Association, Rotary Club and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He is a charter member of the American Association of Black Political Scientists. He was an associate dean at Miami/Dade Community College, a regional dean at the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Univer sities in Miami, dean of special programs at Biscayne College in Miami, director of pro gram development at Shaw University in Raleigh, professor of administrative and urban sciences at Shaw University and vice president for academic affairs at Shaw College in Detroit, Michigan. This is only a partial listing of Battle's out standing accomplishments. He has traveled extensively throughout the world. France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Japan, India, Greece, Israel, Egypt and the Soviet Union are but a few areas Battle has visited. However, Winston-Salem is home for him. He was bom and reared in Rocky Mount but lived for 13 years in Rorida. His favorite pass times are raising roses, reading, and cooking. Battle is a gourmet cook and loves all outdoor activities. As a student in his World Civilization class, I am very impressed with his teaching methods. His lectures incorporate class partici pation, which makes learning about early world civilization very interesting.
