As we look back upon homecoming, we can wit ness that a lot went on and just like Disney World, we just couldn't do it all OPINION were daz zled by queens during the Coronation and were especially touched by the "Queen of all Queens in Ram land," Veronica Howard as she was presented and crowned. We were moved by the words of Benjamin Ruf fin, surprised by the appearance of former Governor James Hunt, and frustrated when Dr. Wilson "almost" Summer study program planned PRESS RELEASE The American Society of Newspaper Editors is seeking minority college students who are interested in working in newsrooms of daily newspapers during the summer of 1989. Project Focus is a summer employment program sponsored by ASNE as a means of attracting more minorities to newspaper careers. Students will work six to 12 weeks as clerks, research assistants or aides to reporters. In addition to their salary, partici pants will receive a $300 bonus from ASNE for successfully completing the program. Applicants must be black, Hispanic, Asian-American or Native American (Amer ican Indian) students who are advancing to their sophomore year in college. PepsiCo Foods gives $100,000 to UNCF Michael Jordan, the president and chief executive officer of PepsiCo Worldwide Foods Inc., which includes Frito-Lay Inc., presented a $100,000 check to the United Negro College Fund at the UNCF Corporate and Special Gifts Luncheon Oct. 13 at the Radisson Hotel in Orlando, Fla. Jordan was the keynote speaker at the luncheon, which was hosted by General Mills Restaurants. Bill Hattaway, president of intemational for General Mills, serves as general chairman of the Orlando campaign and presided over the luncheon. Jordan said in his address that: "College is becoming less accessible to young blacks than it used to be. Ten years ago, blacks were going to college at a per-capita rate of only 3 percent behind whites. Today blacks are 15 percent behind whites in college attendance. So after seeing substantial improvement in making college accessible to blacks, we are now slipping back. The major problem is money." Jordan said that Frito-Lay and its parent company, PepsiCo, want the students enrolled at the United Negro College fund colleges to look to them for help. We got rowdy at the pep rally and mini parade and then danced throughout the night at the js^e-dawn dance. We cheered sleepily at the parade Saturday morn ing as we watched our peers ride gracefully on floats and cars. To look back on the football game can give one chills as the Rams showed the Bulldogs what being a real winner is all about Shirley Murdock, Jeffrey Osborne and Tony, Toni, and Tone ended homecoming with a delightful show. Let's not forget the class dances, the stepshow, the alumni activities, the homecoming disco at Sassy's and many more activities. Even though the full Ram homecoming spirit was not in effect, homecoming was again successful.
