PAGE 6 The News Argus Dec. 2,1988 9{ezus By Jarvis S. Koonce The nerve center of campus is gradually taking on a new look. Day by day — a plank here, some concrete there — slowly and sure ly O'Kelly Library is expanding in style and form. Dr. Mae Rodney and the library friends have gone through a great deal of effort to bring a positive change to the library since 1986. The general purpose, said Dr. Rodney, "is to strengthen the library services here at Winston- Salem State University. What we would like to do is expand various parts of the collection. We would like to make more equipment available to the students and fac ulty." Dr. Rodney would like to see the library expand its programs, she said. O'Kelly Library is expanding "When I say expand, I mean something beyond library instruc tions and reference assistance. What I am thinking is that we would bring in authors to discuss their works. Maybe have concerts — benefit concerts — and possibly sponsor art shows," she said. Dr. Rodney said that the library should have a good bond between itself and the community — not only the school community but the entire city. "A library is only as good as the demands placed on it," she said. "When students go home and see the changes in the libraries there or here in the city. when they get back, they wonder why we don't have those things at Winston-Salem State. And if we don’t change to meet the public's needs, then the library is useless." Jarvis S. Koonce is a senior majoring in mass communica tions. SpanisH Svol^n 9{ere msm. ROADWAY PACKAGE SYSTEM Spanish Club looking forward to going on a trip to Mexico By Georgellen Brown STAFF REPORTER ' The de Club de Espanol (Spanish Club) is a group of people who are interested in learning more about the Spanish culture. This year’s officers include Ricardo Smith, president; Marvin Johnson, vice- president; Mia Wilson, secretary; and Kim berly Black, treasurer. Kisha Covington serves as the club’s representative to the Stu dent Government Association. The club also consists of eight active members with Dr. Micheal Brookshaw and Dr. Nita Dewberry as club advisors. The Spanish Club has been active on WSSU's campus for four years. This year, as well as in the past, it will sponsor a foreign candy sale as well as its mighty taco sale. The club is looking forward to the spring 1989 semester. Why? Because they are planning a trip to Mexico to become more in touch with the Spanish culture and have on-hand experience with the Spanish language. The theme for the club is Juntos Triun- faremos which means "We will triumph." The members also call themselves Los Carneros Hispanicos, which means in English The Spanish Rams. The colors con sists of red, green and white, which are used on the Spanish Club flag with also the Rose as the club flower. The club also has a song entitled the same as the theme. If anyone is interested in becoming a Spanish Ram, contact Dr Micheal Brook shaw or Dr Nita Dewberry in the Commu nications Building.
