Remembering King: A campus celebration

"And the band played on." Remember
that saying? Well, apply that to the pro
gram that was held on Jan. 12 in K.R.
Williams Auditorium in honor of the late
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
King's oldest daughter, Yolanda King,
was scheduled to be the guest speaker but
did not arrive in time to speak due to
inclement weather.
Nevertheless, the program continued
and was a success. As the song "We Shall
Overcome" played softly in the back
ground, students, faculty and city residents
filled the auditorium. Before the program
began, members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fra
ternity distributed candles that were later
used in the candlelight ceremony.
SGA President John Rankins and "Mr.
Ram 88-89" Steve Williams opened the
program with a synopsis of what Dr. King
stood for and believed in. Later Williams
sang a song titled "Blessed Assurance"
which the crowd thoroughly enjoyed.
The Rev. Bobby Simmons, pastor of
Reynolds Temple CME Church, delivered
King's most famous speech, "I Have a
Dream," and although it was not Dr. King,
the words and their meanings are still the
same and have the same effect.
Dr. Donald Mac-Thompson, a mem
ber of the Social Science faculty, who was
to introduce Miss King, said that had it not
been for King blacks would not be where
we are today.
The final speaker was Chancellor
Cleon Thompson who said that King was
known for his drumbeat for justice. Ushers
were instructed to light the candle of the
first person in each row and then each f>er-
son was to pass the "flame of justice" to the
next person until all the candles were lit.
The lights were turned off and the
auditorium became silent. The flickering
of the candles was beautiful, as was the
time given to the audience to think back
and give thanks to King and all others for
paving a road for us.
Also in honor of the King Celebration,
there was a baimer contest and a march to
the auditorium. The wirming banner dis
played a picture of Dr. King and the theme
"Living the Dream." The winner of the
banner contest was The Wesley Founda
tion. Even though it rained, the march con
tinued. It started from the Alumni building
and ended at the auditorium.
Note: Ms. King's speech has been
rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 20 in
ihe K.R. Williams Auditorium.
