SPORTS NOTES
Gaines to Head NABC, 1989-90
By Joyce McMillan
SPORTS EDITOR
Coach "Bighouse" Clarence
Gaines the tall, big sort of easy going
guy who is athletic director and head
coach of the basketball team was
recently appointed as the new presi
dent of the National Association of
Basketball Coaches.
Gaines has held the position of
director for nine years, was fourth
vice president, thrid vice president,
second vice president and this year,
first vice president. This position lasts
one year and Coach Gaines says he
approaches everything with optimism.
This position does not mean that
Gains can rewrite all the rules and
make things better for all predomi
nantly black schools but maybe put
the idea in the heads of those who
may be in the position to make the
change. Perhaps Coach Gaines will be
able to influence better recruiting for
next season and gain more notoriety
for the black schools.
Congratulations Coach Gaines
from the News Argus Staff!!

Scholarships and
Fellowships
May Be Taxable
Students who receive scholarsliips or
fellowship grants awarded after
August 16, 1986, should be aware that,
for payments after 1986, part or all of
such income may be taxable, according
to the Internal Revenue Service.
Only degree candidates can exclude
these amounts from income, and only
“qualified amounts” can be excluded.
The Tax Reform Act of 1986 defines
qualified amounts as tuition and fees
required for the enrollment or attend
ance of a student at an educational in
stitution, and course fees, books, sup
plies, and equipment. Any other
amounts, such as for room, board,
travel or incidental expenses, must be
reported as income in the year re
ceived.
Many scholarships also include pay
for past, present, or future services.
Any payment received for services is
taxable in the year of payment, even if
the service is required of all candidates
for a particular degree.
Students who are not candidates for
a degree must report all scholarship
and fellowship amounts as income in
the year paid.
Different rules apply to recipients of
scholarships or fellowships awarded
before August 17, 1986. For more
detailed information, call 1-800-
424-3676 for a free copy of IRS
Publication 520, “Scholarships and
Fellowships.”

ing into the program. "I think that each of
them realized that the Reserves offers a
great opportunity to get training in over
180 fields, and make decent money with
little time committed."
All enlistees cited logical reasons for
joining the Army Reserve. The education,
maturational experience and excellent pay
and tuition provisions, all led them to
enlist. Some stated a mild sense of patrio
tism also.
For more information on any of these
programs you can contact SFC Hamblett
