PAGE 10 The News Argus December 1989 Bowie hands Rams first lost by Joyce McMillan WSSU met the Bowie State Bulldogs who surprisingly handed them their first loss of the season. The Rams were defeated 29-21. The Rams were plagued with Bowie Beats the Rams again turnovers and the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on them and claim the victory. WSSU was ahead with 5:25 remaining in the game, when the Bulldog’s Anthony Johnson recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the winning touchdown. Four minutes later, Bowie’s Louis Freeman sealed the victory by intercepting a pass on the Rams 17-yard line. This loss not only handed the Rams their first defeat, but it also dropped them from being ranked number one in the Sheridan Poll to the number two position. WSSU met Bowie three weeks later for the CIAA Championship. TOYOTA LEADERSHIP AWARD By: Joyce E. McMillan, Sports Editor Revenge was in the minds and hearts of the Rams but Bowie State apparently did not have the same sentiments. They defeated WSSU once again 28- 24. The Rams were once again repeatedly plagued with turnovers which Bowie continually capitalized on early in the contest. Within the first six minutes of the game, the Bulldogs were able to score twice. With 9:04 remaining in the first, the Bulldogs were leading 14-0. WSSU finally got on the board with 13:27 in the first half when Broderick Graves cut the lead to 14-7. Bowie’s third score came from an interception by linebacker, Noel Harrison. Before the half, WSSU’s fullback Rodney McKoy added to the Rams’s score with a 5- yard touchdown run. The score was 21-14 at the half. In the second half, Ram’s Dino Beligrinis put up a 21- yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-17. Their first lead for the Rams came with 5:05 left in the third quarter . Graves got the touchdown with a 35-yard run, while breaking tackles. WSSU could not hold onto the lead thus handing Bowie State their first Ct^a Criampionship.
