Photo By: Tuttle Seven Winston-Salem State University students un der the advisement of Dr. Donald Mac-Thompson par ticipated in the Model United Nations Conference, in No vember at Appalachian State University. The seven students who attended were: Maurizio Arce, William Armstrong, Barry Johnson, Marvin Johnson, Miriam Monk, Marsha Warren, and Tanya Wiley. The purpose of The Model United Nations Confer ence is to give students a first hand look at how the United Nations functions as an inter national institution. Accord ing to Marvin Johnson, the students look at present world problems and write resolutions to those problems. The coun tries represented are actual members of the United Na tions. The students paired off into two groups and attended two separate sessions. The groups from WSSU repre sented both Senegal, and France. Marvin Johnson said, “It wasn’t easy, because some of the best schools were repre sented, Ohio State University, North Carolina State Univer sity, and Bluefield College to name a few.” Winston-Salem State University was the only predominantly black school represented. This is the third time that Winston-Salem State Univer sity has attended the confer ence. The last two times that Winston-Salem State Univer sity attended they returned with awards, (Honorable Mention, The Superior Award for Best Delegation, and the Outstanding Award). In April 1990, Winston-Sa lem State University along with other predominantly black col leges in North Carolina, will at tend another conference at Johnson C. Smith University. Duke University, and North Carolina State University have also been invited to participate. The WSSU students will also attend the regionals to be held in New York also in April. Any student interested in participating in The Model United Nations Conference should come to Coltrane Hall, Social Science Department and see Dr. Lorenzo Battle or Dr. Donald Mac-Thompson. WSSU Students Participate in UN Conference By Mattie Morrison On February 14, 1990, the North Carolina Consortium for Intemational and Intercultural Education conference was held. This consortium links histori cally black private and public institutions with the United States State Department The Model United Nations is sponsored by the North Caro lina Consortium for Intema tional and Intercultural Educa tion (NCCIIE). NCCnE is a consortium of historically black colleges and universities in North Carolina, dedicated to promoting interest in and study of intemational affairs. The Consortium was founded by seven institutions, Bennett Col lege, Johnson C. Smith Univer sity, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, St. Au gustine College, Shaw Univer sity and Winston-Salem State University. NCCIIE is co-spon soring this event with the Tri angle Universities Security Seminar (TUSS), a consortium consisting of Duke University, North Carolina State University, and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The purpose of the meeting at WSSU was to select a Secre tary General. The duties of the Secretary General at the Model United Nations are as follows: one, the Secretary General pre sides over the Model UN; two. the Secretary General will open the Model and deliver the Re port on the Work of the Organi zation Speech, preside over the opening ceremony and all other ceremonies; three, the Secretary General will mediate and settle all disputes which may arise dur ing the model, seeking the ad vice of advisers when necessary; and four, the Secretary General will deliver a closing speech re viewing the achievements of the delegates in the Model. Barry Johnson and Marvin Johnson (not related), of WSSU, won two of three positions to go on to the Model United Nations. The other position went to a student from Johnson C. Smith Dr. Donald MacThompson, coordinator of Political Sci ence in the Social Science De partment, said “the two WSSU students will assist the Secretary General because they were elected as deputies for the conference. In that conference, the students will actually assimilate the mem bers of the United Nations du plicating in various activities and issues that pertain to over all global concerns.” Johnson C. Smith will host the Model United Nations on April 6-7th. The required activities in the competition are as follows: one, a four-minute pre-pre- pared speech.
