During the week of February 19th through 23rd. the Math and Computer Sci ence Department Chair woman Elva Jones, along with faculty members Bajwa, Reddy, and Caldwell, joined other educators from across the country in attending the week’s conferences. At the annual Com puter Science Conference, educators held special inter est group meetings focusing on topics like artificial intel ligence, computer graphics, and new lab tools for teach ing computer science. A spe cial session was held concem- ing the prospects for women and minorities in the com puter science field. Accord ing to Jones, those prospects currently look ver> bright. In fact, she estimates that the cli mate is presently just right for women and minorities to break into the upper levels of high technology jobs. As chairperson of the Math and Computer Science Depart ment, Jones had the opportu nity to intervif"” twelve pro spective faculty members. Having the chance to meet and talk with instructors from other institutions, Jones had the opportunity to com pare notes. In her view, WSSU’s computer science department receives a top- notch rating when compared to non-research institutions or those not offering the Ph.D. in the field. No educational confer ence in Washington D.C. would be complete without at least one congressional visit. Jones stated that sev eral congressmen made ap pearances at meetings and discussed plans to seek more funding for research in high technology and computer sci ences.
