PAGE 16 The News Argus May 1990 Annual Speech Contest Held By Mattie Morrison The Department of English and Foreign Languages and the Speech Communications Pro gram sponsored the Seventh Annual Speech Contest on Thursday April 5, 1990 in the lecture room of the Hall-Patter- son Building. The topic of the speeches was “New Freedoms Around The World.” The judges were Rick Amme, anchorman for WXII-TV Channel 12 in Winston-Salem, and Wilma L. Lassiter, profes sor emeritus, former chairperson of the Department of English & Foreign Languages and a mem ber of the Board of Trustees at WSSU. The coordinators were Dr. Fred Eady and Professor William T. Burke. The program was hosted bv James W. Whitehead. Elliot Pritchett, winner of the contest, is from Weldon, N.C. Although Pritchett won the con test, he does not feel as though he did his very best. He said that he did not prepare his speech until one o’clock that morning. Pritchett said, “In the midst of a storm appears a rainbow. What I mean is when things seem to be going the worst the rainbow appears. I thank God for the blessings.” Rick Amme did not view Pritchett as unprepared at all. He said that Pritchett told of the freedoms of other countries and then brought it all home and re lated it to America and that is what made Pritchett’s speech a winner. In second and third place were Tammi Dunlap and Malik A. Sharif respectively. The top three finalists received engraved plaques. The other contestants who participated received hon orable mentions. Their names are Hilbert Brown, Crystal Greenwood, and Taye Lott.
