Greeks Bid Adieu To Pledging

The National Pan-Hellenic
Council, along with the national bodies
of the eight Greek organizations, have
dccided to ban pledging in Greek
organizations nationwide.
Over the past ten years,
historically black sororities and
fraternities have been hit with a wave
of lawsuits for hazing where physical
harm has come to those who were
pledging.
Perhaps the most rccent example
of this involves the lawsuit against the
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at
MorehouseUnivcrsity in Atlantii. Last
spring, an Alpha hopeful died as a
result of hazing practices by that
fraternity.
The words, “no pledging”, have
caused an uproar throughout
Greckdom. No pledging means that
pledgees may not be dressed alike or
march in a uniformed line. Addressing
and greeting of big sisters and big
brothers will also be obsolete. Closed
sessions where special Greek rituals
are taught and practiced arc no longer

StudenTalk Tackles Date Rape

Women on college campuses have
expressed a growing fear about a subject
that hasn’t been publically debated at great
length — date rape.
At Winston-Salem State, a campus-
wide forum was held as part of Sexual
Awareness Week. StudenTalk, a student-
oriented talk show, kicked off it’s second
season on SepLl3 by encouraging dialogue
between young men and women about this
problem.
Date rape is no longer considered
something that happens every once in a
while. FBI statistics from 1987 give
women ample reason to be concerned
about their safety.
• Among college students, 27.2
percent of all college women have been
raped. Of those women, 57.8 percent were
raped by their date and projections show
