The News Argus October 1990 Page 4 Budget Cuts Hit WSSU Hard By CANDACE MARSHALL Staff Writer Each year North Carolina works to improve its educational status through promises of additional funding to the system’s universities. In previous years the promised funds have been cut due to imbalances in the slate’s final budgeL This year has not been any different. The Slate initially alioUed funds and later found the funds were not available. The O’Kelly Library and the business department are two areas of Winston- Salem Stale University affected by the deficiency of funds. The O’Kclly Library lost approximately S7,(XX) from their proposed ’90-’91 budget. This is not a drastic decrease, although it will subdue the library’s progress. “ We rely heavily on stale money,” r* said Dr. Mae Rodney, director of O’Kelly Library. ‘The cut hurts us forever because we cannot buy certain books published in 1990. We are fortunate because we did not use temporary money to keep hours as neighboring universities did.” Since the funding from the state is a major source of the library’s revenues, the budget’s administrators are protective of the allotment the library receives. They realize the intense impact the cuts place on the library. This is a plus, but it does not make up for the losses year after year. Regardless of having less money to work with. Dr. Rodney is confident that the library can continue to successfully serve the students. The loss of the business department has also been an intense loss. The The Never Ending Search for Grants By Stephen Smith Staff Writer Many faculty and Alumni members of Wiiision-Salcm State University are external funding WSSU has received in ihc past few years. But also responsible for the progressive growth of this institution is the Grants and Proposals office. Formerly known as the office of Sponsored Research, the Grants and Proposals office responsibilities include: identifying funding sources whether it be Private Foundations, Corporations.etc., notifying faculty members of these sources and contributing to the development and distribution of the proposals. “This department has made great efforts in informing faculty of all the opportunities available to them. I’d like to add that of conceptualizing projects beneficial to the enhancement of our student body” stated Mrs.Armstrong . It’s hard to argue considering the facts. WSSU has received major government grants written by faculty members in the past. Some include: Project Strengthening-for the Life Science Dept, written by Mrs. Wilvena Atkinson and the Health Career Opportunity Program (H-COP)-for the Medical Research Dept, written by Dr. Betty Alexander. These are just a few of the many proposals written by faculty See Page 9 FAST FUNDRAISING WEEK. Earn up to $1000 in one week for your campus organization. Plus a chance at $5000 more! The business department represents approximately 35 percent of the student body, but only about 12 percent of the faculty. Without an adequate staff to instruct larger classes are'formed. This affects the quality of the education because larger classes detract from the effectiveness of the teacher- student relationship Bailey said, “Do to the shortage of faculty I would like to have a program for enhancing professors. I would like to recruit (students) from 10 surrounding counties with scholarships. I would also like to start a student enrichment center (for business), but the budget loss stops this.” Bailey also stated, ‘This years Dr. Willie Bailey, business director, commented, "The budget problem makes it hard to recruit faculty; incentives (such as moving expenses are cut." Dr. Willie Bailey, business director, commented, ‘The budget problem makes it hard to recruit faculty; incentives (such as moving expenses) are cut.” Dr. Bailey has constructive ideas to take the place of the shortage in faculty. cut has been worse than previous.” Bailey examines grants and other aid as supplements, but this is not always successful. Bailey explained that the business department does the best possible, with the money they have. Goin Home It's almost time to hit the road for a few days.
