members . Their constant efforts to
improve the growth and opportunities of
this institution are to be commended.
The dedication shows. WSSU has over
50 faculty members who have written
proposals. With the combined efforts of
faculty members and that of the Grants
and Proposals office, 50 percent of the
proposals written are being funded by
various Corporations and Foundations
throughout this country. The efforts of
Mrs. Armstrong’s office and that of
faculty is not only apparent in dollars
and cents, but in our academic programs
as well.
Various academic programs who
have benefited include the Dept, of
Physical Science, Biomedical Research,
Dept, of Mass Communications, as well
as the Nursing Program who through the
works of Mrs. Sadie Webster, acquired
Four Scholarships for students in the
Nursing Program.
If progress persists, WSSU will soon
be on the map with the elite benefactors
of this state. The Grants and Proposals
office will be largely responsible when
that day comes. Their efforts and
dedication to this university are to be
admired by all those who have benefited
the from the funding.

majors to gain the experience that will
give them a competitive edge, Blount
feels that it is essential for the
department to establish an ongoing
relationship with the commercial
broadcast and print organizations in the
area. These contacts will also make it
easier to obtain more guest speakers in
the field of mass communications.
A native of Raleigh, Blount worked
as a technician and operated studio and
control room equipment at WNCT-TV
in Greenville, NC. An internship at
WRAL-TV in Raleigh, allowed him to
get into remote broadcasting using
remote microwave. Blount has also
worked in radio. At the sister stations
WKIX/WYYD, Blount was the
assistant chief engineer and program
director.
Prior to starting his career in mass
communications, Blount attended North
Carolina Central University, where he
received his bachelor’s degree in
English media journalism and his
graduate degree in educational media.
He recei''ed his doctorate at North
Carolina State University in
communications with adult education
with a specialization in administration.

needed to be less secular events. What
I’ve done is organize a gospel fest.
We’re trying to get national acts. Right
now we’re focusing on the Winnans,
Shirley Caesar, Tramaine Hawkins and
the Mississippi Mass Choir. There are
several national acts that we plan to
acquire for this particular event and we
will also be using local talent here on
the campus. That will be the opening
event of our Homecoming week of
festivities. That Friday night at the
Benton Convention Center will be a
regional step show in which I will be
inviting all of the Greek letter
organizations from various universities.
After the step show is over, we would
